Basic gopro tips

I am taking this winter to learn, amongst all other basic computer skills, video editing. Long ago I decided I hated computers and now I am trying to make up for it big time. Knowing the awesome resource that NS is, I'm going to be hitting you up for help. To start, I'm working on a MacBook Pro with a Hero2.

SLOW MO. My question is; how do you get super slow mo? I've got the basic understanding of shooting in 60p, conforming in cinema tools, 30p timeline, etc. but that would just give you half speed, correct? I read through Ian Provo's advice and he says he just uses that method, but appears to have far beyond half speed. Twixtor?

Forgive my idiotic question if it is, I've never even downloaded a song before and I am attempting to tackle FCP. Humour me.

but seriously.

if you are shooting 60fps then the slowest you can make it is %40 slower then original speed. so if you are using cinema tools and conforming then conform it to 24 fps.

what is easier to do though is in final cut (i assume that is what you are using) just change the speed to %40 and uncheck the frame blending. i like this option better because you have an choice to go back to original speed.

Slow mo, you can use time remapping in Adobe Premiere or in After Effect if you feel like making something sharp and net. Twixtor is often used without knowledge and comprehension of this tool.

To get super slow motion, more than the 40% by conforming 60p to 24p, you have to either drop frames (make it a slower frame rate)/duplicate frames or create new ones. Twixtor generates new frames that go in between the existing ones, but it isn't the most accurate and there's usually some artifacting. If you use AE it has a built in effect called pixel motion which works like twixtor, you can try it out for yourself and see. It works for some shots but not for others.

I actually had time today to do this and hit a hurdle pretty quick. I used mpeg streamclip to export to quicktime and convert to prores 422 lt and also just 422. When i import it to fcp and watch it there it is shitty looking. Interlaced I guess (tiny lines and then a big blur that rolls up the screen when it moves fast).

Like I said, I'm super green but I'm going to learn this bitch, with a lot of help!

I am exporting it with these settings:
apple pro res 422/lt 30p
100% quality
unscaled frame size 720x1280
unclicked interlaced scaling


shooting with a hero2 720x30p

any thoughts? is this far to vague? Am I doomed to fail?

Weird. When I export it. Everything is perfect. It's only in the fcp viewer

premier pro all the way in my opinion, its the most user friendly, little pricy but id say worth it

So I just got a hookup on a GoPro Silver myself - my first time owning one and my first time shooting any video since about 8 years ago. I'm going to film through the rest of winter but not touch the footage until May because I'm way too busy in winter to edit.

So should I just shoot everything on 1080p/30? I'm not into slow-mo much, but I can slow 30fps footage a little, right? All footage will be freeride, no park. So probably not worth shooting 60fps and taking up extra disk space? Or should I even just stick to 720/30 if I'm only going to upload to Vimeo in the end? The GoPro footage will be mixed in with 720/30 footage from my still camera too anyway.

ProTune or no? I'll pick up Premiere probably (which I used a little in 2003-2004), but probably not any other software. I shoot stills a lot: ProTune is just like shooting Raw instead of JPEG, yeah? So if I want the footage to look decent straight out of the camera then I should leave ProTune off?
