NS I need your help! My bad dog.

NS I need your help potty training my dog. He is about 4 years old and still pees in the house. He is a shiba inu, we got him when his mom (who we own) had puppies. We have never had an issue potty training a dog. We usually rub their nose in the pee, spank them, and put them outside. The other dogs stop doing it after one or two times. He just won't learn, so we got dog diapers for him to avoid a mess. He will still pee in those, and if the diaper is off he will pee on things on the ground or where they are hanging from something.

Most recently he peed on my sisters new pair of white shoes that she got for Christmas. My parents and sister want to give him away. But I love this dog too much for that. Please, do you guys have any advice to help me out?

Get him fixed. Neutering will help with the territory issue. He is marking his territory, he obviously thinks he is in charge.
Make sure the smell from the old pee spots gets completely neutralized. If he can still smell it, he will think its okay to pee there.
If nothing else works, build him a dog house and make him an outside dog.

OP typically dogs go to the bathroom inside for a few reasons. First they have to go. Make sure they have access to the outdoors regularly. Small dogs have small bladders meaning more frequent potty breaks. Second reason is lack of exercise. When dogs are deprived of regular walks where they have the opportunity to do "dog" things like mark there territory, sniff, search for small animals, ect, they will have built up energy and this energy will show itself in the form of misbehavior. Third reason is it is instinctual to mark territory for males. So if there are other dogs who frequent, a female dog around, or they are not fixed you will have more issues than usual.

If you want to solve the problem scolding is almost never a good option. You rub their face in it bc u are mad or u think they will understand. That is not the case as they have no concept for why you are rubbing their face in their piss. If you dont catch them in the act you are not making the situation better by scolding. Catch them in the act, stop them calmly, take them outside, praise them for doing it outside. The older the dog the more engrained the habits. Getting mad wont help, it just creates distrust in your pet. If you are mad at your pets behavior, you have failed them, they have not failed you.

Communicating with pets is like a puzzle. You are the one who demands the rules to be followed and if your dad spoke chinese and then yelled at you when you didnt do the chores bc u couldnt understand him that would be frustrating and cause tension in your life. Your dog feels the same. Change your approach and your dog will change his actions.

for my pup we started by basically predicting when he would go to the bathroom (usually about 15 minutes after eating) then just taking him outside and waiting for him to go. He never really got the chance to go inside, so he just assumed that outside was place to do it. The few occasions he peed inside, just the stern NO and BAD, pointing at and making him look at the pee (the same way we punish him for about anything) was all it really took.

but he's still a pup even now, can't say how it'll work on a dog that's 4 and already has his routine.

Fourth reason is they're sick. Have you taken him to the vet and checked for a UTI or run blood tests to see if he has some sort of infection or illness?

We just make sure to let my dog out regularly when he is inside and hes good. But that being said hes basically an outdoor dog anyways so he shits where he pleases
