Looking for first car ideas... 4 wheel drive 4 door. Looks good. I've been working and have about 12k for one. Any ideas?

go forester XT, awesome cars, i have a WRX...insurance sucks especially for me, forester XT, you still get the turbo so its still wicked fast and u dont have the same insurance rates. its 4 wheel drive bosses through the snow and lowered looks legit!

e46 BMW 325xi wagon... My dad used to drive one and had no issues until about 120k miles. With that price ranges you should be able to find one with around 60k miles so you shouldn't have to worry to much about maintenance.

That or an Audi Allroad

you need to be thinking about future costs of the car. MPG, Maintenance, and how well does the car retain value. Also OP if you are able to make repairs, and basic maintenance that is a huge factor. just as a heads up i would stay away from audi, and bmw. those cars are crazy expensive to repair.

Audi all road for sure my buddy has one and its never had any problems except he hit a speed bump going 70 and it broke the front suspension.......so dont do that

My stock '04 is pretty sweet in everything just gotta become an extension of the car. But I'd go with 4 runner or FJ cruiser those are rock hard vehicles

I would say civic but 4wd so honda CR-V 2002+ have nice space. Or just get a truck. Good for transport(?)Lots of space. Good for doing nitetime urban (lights/generator)

Kinda agree with the last part but there is only one car known as the Audi Quattro. Yes I know that is what there all wheel drive is called but in the 80's they made what was basically a street legal rally car named the Quattro so that they could compete in group b rallying. 12k isn't gonna get you one though haha

I can't stress this enough. I've been driving one for the past two years, up to the mountain every weekend, and it is an amazing car. I love it so much that I plan on buying my own (the one I've been using is my family's extra car) this summer. I looked and you can find a '05 for around 10,000, which is a great deal for a great car. You wouldn't be disappointed. And it has had no problems and has nearly 100k miles on it

It's funny how different things are. It must be sick to live in a country with cheap gas and lots of big v8:s. Here, Audis and BMW:s are, along with volvos and VW:s, the most common first car. Especially here in north, various Quattros and Syncros/4motion, are very common amongst the kids who can actually afford to have their own car.

Not really, if you refer to an Audi Quattro you would be referring to the original road/rally car know as the Audi quattro (or Ur-Quattro) made from 1981-1990, the first four wheel drive rally car,

And it should not to be confused with the Allroad Quatro (1999-2005)

Which is indeed an A6 that features an advanced air suspension system, electronic diff locks, larger wheels with all-terrain tyres, and flared and unpainted bumpers.

am I missing something here.

Maybe it's just because i don't rice my cars but if i'm buying a 4 wheel drive car that "bosses through the snow" why the hell would i want to lower the ground clearance it has if I'm using it to "boss through snow"???

love the car, we had a mercury marnier for a few years (same car) thing had 156,000 miles and it was running strong. i have a 2003 ford explorer it is a great car, beast in snow, but the downside is gas milage. 12 mpg driving country roads. girlfriend has a 2004 escape, fwd gets around 23 mpg. love that car and would recommend it to anyone.

a friend of mine works at a restaurant on the slopes in valle aurina and he used to drive his 4x4 panda over the side of the slopes and up to the restaurant much to the dismay of the groomers so one day they simply piled a ton of snow onto his little car, it took him 2 days of shoveling to get it back out but it was completely fine ! :)

simply drove it back down and never did it again :P

yeah that wasnt good at all, but seriously the only problem i ever had was the air suspension and this was why. so fast i hit 125 in it tonight without even trying.

According to what you said, what I said may not be such a bad idea. Has good MPG, retains value better than other options, and if you keep up with basic maintenance then there will be very few repairs to worry about. They may be crazy expensive to repair if you beat them to absolute shit and dont take care of them, but otherwise it shouldn't be a big deal. Sure you will have to pay slightly more for regular maintenance but its a kick ass car that will keep running as long as taken care of properly. The inline six block in the e46's is practically bullet proof and surprisingly dependable contradictory to what many people say. I know this, the car has been circulating through my family and is still running strongly today at around 150k miles. As far as the allroad I mentioned, it is definitely less dependable than the beemer but has far better off road capabilities so I thought i should include it in the mix

seriously, give it up.
great little car, but not for a kid's first vehicle.

I can almost guarantee than any sub-12k e46xi is going to need either brakes/front axle+cv components/rear suspension (not to mention anything else in maintenance debt).
if he's not working on it himself, any of these items is at least an 800$+ job at an indy garage.
plus the 325 is slow as molasses and gets pretty average MPGs given the size/output of the car.


AR6 gave the best advice in here so far. I'd listen to that.

It's funny how everyone on here seems to think that the German cars are the most expensive as far as maintenance. Compared to what? Here, American and Italian cars are considered the most un-reliable. Along with British cars obviously, but nobody really bought them.
