Looking for first car ideas... 4 wheel drive 4 door. Looks good. I've been working and have about 12k for one. Any ideas?

Don't do this unless you have a higher budget. Its really hard to find a decent used subaru because most people drive them until they are about to explode then put them up for sale. Look for a 4runner or an suv like that because you can probably find a decent one in your price range.

When i see a thread like this one i always see people advising big trucks..
What's the point of having a big car as your first car?

Most of them are pretty heavy drinkers and you don't need that extra space that much for your first car right?

I think it'll be quite expensive as a first car, but hey, that's just my opinion.

honestly with 12k there doesn't have to be much comprimising... maybe just on mileage but jeez he can find something that fits his description...
I would keep a few cars in mind and take your time looking. Go to brand or even model specific forums and check out the for sale as great deals can be had

Go out west to but a car. better selection, lower prices and no salt damage. Plus it is kind of an adventure to drive it back. In san fran you could easily find a nice subaru for under 12k.

Get out of here idiot. An audi quattro? That is pretty vague in terms of what car. Secondly, for 12k, you really can't get a quality audi unless you buy from a family friend or something like that. Sick of dumb NS kids suggesting oh by a bmw, audi, etc for your first car. Unless you can afford a new one, don't bother

I guess people have different opinions on what is "decent." Paying $12,000 for a piece of shit Audi with 150,000 on the clock just so you can brag about the rings on the front is completely retarded, in my opinion. There will always be time (and money) to buy a German luxury car later in life. What this kid needs is a low mileage, low maintenance econobox with some snow tires.

I guess this is true, however I have seen a number of friends find deals on audi's and vw's on craigslist without even 6 digits on the tac for much less than 12k. just gotta find the right one.

Just search. The only thing kids on NS are going to tell you to do is buy a used Subaru or Audi because half of the people recommending those cars can't even drive yet. Go on Autotrader/Google and figure some shit out yourself, form your own opinions, and don't rely on NS for a personal choice that they know next to nothing about.

i own an audi and i love it, just be sure you have money set aside in case of repairs and such, but the "problems" that everybody says they have are far outweighed by the all-around beauty and performance of the car.

You should spend 9 ish on the car, and keep the extra 3 for future maintenance and snow tires. I'm guessing you could get an early 2000's station wagon with decent mileage for that price. Get an AWD wagon with decent gas mileage. It won't turn heads, but you'll get places, and it'll last you a while. If you do set aside some extra cash for maintenance, it'll really come in handy.

I need to start setting aside some money for shit that happens to my car. Sometimes it'd be nice to have a fund.

In Colorado we have much, much worse. CDOT uses mag chloride to melt snow, which can actually rust out the entire underside of a car in about 4 years if you drive through it enough. That stuff is freaking scary, and car warranties generally don't cover the damage because it just shouldn't get rusted that fast.

But for OP, Honda CR-V or similar is just about perfect if you're planning on being a broke college student/skier. Decent mpg, reliable, does well in snow, fits 5 people and skis and such.

Ya I love fiat panda's drove one around Europe thing was dope but getting one in north america can be kinda tricky/expensive.

But anyway for my suggestion i would have to go with toyota highlander 4 wheel drive hard to get stuck great for skiing lots of space, may not look the best but deff makes up for it in fuel mileage. And if you want to go suby get like a forester or an outback because the sedans and coupes are pretty impractical unless you are using them to get attention.
