Problems with mountain safety (yellow people)

Today, at Keystone, I almost got my pass pulled, for skiing down an open run. There is a bypass to get to the park, and it goes down a blue run. On one side of the run, they made kind of a skiercross course, with little jumps, rollers, and banked turns, and I hauled ass through that, because it was fun. there was a rope down one side so that if you were on the run you couldnt cross over, and vice versa. it was open on the top and bottom.

I rounded the corner, about to turn to go to the park, when I see a yellow guy, with a huge grin on his face yell to his partner "We got one!" then signal for me to talk to him. here's what happened.

me: 'whats up?'
yellow guy: 'what are you doing over there?'
me: 'skiing.'
yg: 'thats closed. why the hell were you over there? let me see your pass'

at this point i was kinda freaked out because i had a warning already and thought he was gonna pull my pass (more on that later)

me: 'sir, the run is open at the top. i have done nothing wrong'

he didnt believe me so he made me hike up to prove that it was open. then he accused me of opening it, but let me ski away.


Earlier in the season, i got an official warning for speed checking and spraying a tree as i exited the park.....


Keystone told me that since i didnt know their names, they cant do anything about it. neither of them were wearing a nametag.

SPARKNOTES: almost got my pass pulled for skiing an open run, then was accused of opening it myself. Keystone refuses to acknowledge any wrongdoing.


Anyone have any other stories like this? particularly at keystone?

Haha got my first warning ever last Saturday haha I went down a closed glade and my friend was just dropping in when the yellow dudes saw Gina nd gave us shit. I was really chill tho and kept apologizing so we got off with a warning . One of the guys told us some bs about how the bears don't hibernate and if I get hurt I would get eaten hahaha

First put your pass in a microwave for 10-20 seconds to fry your rfid chip, that way they cant scan it from inside your pocket, then next time they give you shit tell them to fuck themselves and out ski them to the bottom.

take a look the the conditions of your pass, when you buy it you make an agreement to abide buy the rules, if you don't they may take disciplinary actions

So was it on the ski cross thing or on the cat walk that like traverses across the two green runs to a-51.

That ski cross thing is so fun though. except on the day i went it got really icy and bombed out and by the end of the day and I was hauling through it and bottomed out, slid on some ice, and launched off of the 2nd set of rollers. It should be less icy later in the season though. it's for sure open to the public if that's what he thought you were doing, being on a private run.

the guys in yellow can be total fuck heads though, especially where Schoolmarm, Silver spoon, and Paymaster/Frenchmen intersect, and will totally get on your ass if you only are going faster than the speed to barely make the catwalk to Montezuma Exp. without skating, and by barely I mean you have to skate almost the whole thing while they ignore the little gapers straight-lining with no control. I'm also pretty sure some of them don't even ski or board and are just taxied up by the sleds

and to contribute to this thread I did the same thing but it speed checked in the middle of the run so i would make like a short white room experience and got yelled at. on the next run down it was the same guy so I did it again but while in the white room I stopped and laid on my side in this position. /claim

ive only been to breck/key near a dozen times so far and i already hate those guys with a burning passion.

i usually wave estatically or give them big toothy grins or butter 3's right next to them or something unusual. or go extremely fucking slow and get in a tuck pose and go inches away from their feet or sign

what the hell? Spraying a tree gets you a warning? I assume that means you can get your pass pulled for hitting side booters too. Sounds incredibly lame.

whistler is really trying to crack down on people skiing fast in slow zones/learning areas and hitting side booters. I don't know how they got so many people to be snow patrol (I like to call them the fun police)

Me and my friends call them speed Nazis. A couple of them at my local ski area are pretty chill but the others are damn annoying. I got yelled at for jumping off a road crossing when I was the only one on the trail, another time they were standing halfway up writing down the chair numbers of people who didn't have the bar down and taking there passes at the top, or pulling over people hitting side booters.


Meanwhile on another trail gapers are fucking killing themselves by going to the summit on there first day.

I understand it to an extent. There are plenty of people just having fun that are getting fucked with, but I can't blame the mountains.


When you have dumbass kids not paying attention and running people over non stop I'm not surprised they're cracking down on them.

Stupid kids are why we can't have nice things. Actually stupid parents raising stupid kids are taking all the fun out of the world. This resort my dad works at no longer allows riding bikes inside. Grew up riding bmx there. That was what we did to pass the time all summer and get from A to B. The rule started years after I stopped going there ever but it still sucks. Stupid kids were running people over non stop, running into cars and shit. No more fun.

I was at keystone and my buddy ducked the rope to the park and we ended up next to each other and a patroller though I ducked the rope and almost pulled my pass

it was on the ski cross thing and they stopped me at the snowgun right before the bypass cat track turns away...


they are pretty lenient on the top bit if schoolmarm before the bypass, but if you keep going and dont take the bypass, god save your soul.........

I actually think they get joy out of ruining other people's day. At my local mountain, I was given a warning for "sitting on my skis to go fast." Apparently I was out of control and was putting the imaginary people that were around me in danger.
I also witnessed a ski patroller yell for a snowboarder to stop, and then when he didn't, the ski patroller ambushed the snowboarder and tackled him to the ground saying "Show me your fucking pass!"
I understand these guys have jobs to do and I give them tons of respect when they do their jobs right, I just hate the patrollers that are out to clip your pass or yell at you.

but there is one patroller at my mountain that just hates my crews guts. It finds the stupidest shit to fight with us about...like reaching over and hitting a pole with a ski pole. ANyways, the owners of the mtn love us so ole ray cant do shit

Only really had one bad experience with Ski Patrol. My brother was bombing one of the only runs open on preseason, and was just starting to slow down after passing a slow sign, so I can totally understand that, but the guy was a douche. I usually find myself having a harder time with instructors than Patrollers.

To all you with ski patrol probs. This is different. At Vail resorts, they think it's cool to hire people to catch people who are going. To fast, to reclace, or really having fun.

I was skiing switch and i got a $200 ticket, or take an 8 hour mountain safety course. I mean, it was a little crowded, but not worth $200. It was fucking stupid.

heads up..... any 'unsafe skiing' in slow zones is automatically doubled fines this year now...

and to whoever said to microwave my pass, I did that and they told me at Breck that i had to get it reprinted or surrender my pass because people were doing that to dodge patrol

I got bitched at for riding switch about 2 Mph, I wasn't trying to be cool or anything, I was looking for my group.

But yeah, yellow guys are everywhere at Keystone. The runs coming down from A-51 were loaded with them along with people from out of town who can't really ski and ice patches, but they still freak out over everything.

But without the yellow jackets no one have the undeniable childhood joy of skiing past them as fast as possible and then disappearing into the trees. That was seriously a very large and important part of my winters around age 11.

The yellow people at keystone can be super annoying. I was there at 8:45 on an uncrowded day skiing down to the park and I got bitched at by ski patrol for going too fast when there wasn't another person in sight.

"Hosts" and "Mountain Safety" are really cool at Mammoth, unless you're wildly out of control or going stupid fast, they'll just ask you to slow down. No fines (although I'm sure somewhere in California law it's allowed). I duck ropes between runs all the time. As long as you're going slow and watching out where you're going, they don't care. Even at Bear/Summit/High they're generally cool.

It's a bummer they're such assholes elsewhere. If there's not a visible safety concern what's the need for anything more than a warning?

if patrol tackles you you have two legal choices:

1) beat the holy hell out the dbag. they are not legally allowed to physically detain you, let alone assault you.

2) sue the holy hell out of the resort(aka lifetime pass) for any "injury" that you incurred from the assault.

defending yourself from someone who is assaulting you is perfectly legal.

breaking someones nose, jaw or face is perfectly fine as long as you arent spending too much time doing it. If you get blindsided like the guy i quoted, you DO get a huge benefit of the doubt.

The key to the keystone and breck yellow jackets is to carve a few turns in front of them coming down the hill. You can go plenty fast but just show them you are in control at the same time. I have blown by tons of yellow jackets and have never once been yelled at or pulled over. One of my roommates likes to straightline every run he skis and he always gets yelled at. I can carve turns right behind him going nearly as fast and I never get yelled at. But there's always power tripping employees, especially at keystone, and it sounds like you had to deal with one.
