What makes certain art special?

What's makes some art better than others? It's just interesting how some art is special simply because of the artist where as if somebody else did the same thing, it would be dismissed as trash. I guess you can say the same thing about many aspects of life but I just notice it a lot in the art world.

it's about originality and creativity, not just aesthetics. there are thousands and thousands of artists today that can create really beautiful and stunning art that i would love to have displayed in my home, but that's not what makes a piece of art valuable. a monet, picasso, van gogh or cezanne painting is worth so much not only because they're aesthetically beautiful, but also because they each made people re-think what, in this case, painting could be.

I used to be so into graffiti... Around freshman year in high school. I know you'll probably laugh, so would I, but I was really really into it. These last couple years I stopped, because of a few near misses/ school pressure, etc., but I plan on moving to Richmond next year and starting again. Sorry for bs post but this just made me miss it.

There's three main things you look at when evaluating art:

1. Artwork itself

2. Artist

3. Time period

So when the regular person walks into a modern art gallery and dismisses the work as something they could create they are only judging the artwork itself but they haven't really taken into account information about the artist or the time period. 

Usually the reason why art is 'special' is not solely because of the artwork itself.  Once you understand the artist's life and inspirations and the work's place in history you can learn why that piece of art is special.

Art and artists who are innovative and influential are usually considered to be 'special.'

I hate it when people do this.

Mostly happens when they look at an artwork from Rothko.

The very simple answer to that would be: "But you didn't."

There is a difference between tagging (name "scribbled" on anything) and actual graffiti pieces.

It's known that most of society regards graffiti all as one category, but fortunately for me I have been exposed to some very interesting things regarding the subject.

Graffiti is a true art form, and one of the most important factors of it is that the artists do their art purely for the purpose of getting their creativity out where they want it, despite the fact that they will not profit or become famous for it.

Near misses only make you smarter. I like to think of it in terms of skiing. When you fuck up on a new trick you know what not to do next time.
Just start sketching and never stop and before long you won't be able to help yourself haha.
