fuck, I hit enter and it posted. so anyways I have been breaking my breaks off quite a lot these days and its getting really annoying, does this happen to all y'all?

No ski brake is safe from a switch landing/fall. I usually get a brake that is a little too narrow for my ski, and they just rest on the ski and never deploy. Of course when your ski comes off it may rocket down the rest of the mountain, but at least your brakes will be intact.

I've broken the brake on my fks's, I've also broken the metal half-moon of the break and had to order a whole new expensive heal-piece. In fact, my friend just mangled his fks breaks today. As I said, they all brake, regardless of what binding you have.

Haha apply enough force and manmade things brake.


@iffe because that would be a lot more labor intensive. Also, having the break there comes in handy since I can still deploy it by hand, which makes it easier to lock my skis together for carrying. And ski hills will give you a hard time if they notice you have a brake missing.

My Marker brake recently bent all the way under my ski when I landed switch off a rail. I could see it from the other side of the ski. Have not broken many brakes, though.

It's also ... Dangerous? I saw a loose ski go sink itself like an arrow into a wooden side of the ski school building at Snoqualmie. It's not an arbitrary rule to have gear that won't go hurtling down the hill and kill someone if you pop a ski off.

Yes it is quite dangerous, my bents can really haul once they get loose.. Sucks for everyone below me.

my fks brake got pretty bent up when my ski popped off switch with my full weight still on the ski. I was able to mend it back but its definitely pretty wobbly & loose now.

Salomon & other skis with the screw on brakes, well they just explode in that situation, but at least they are easily replaced unlike fks ones.

Its so dangerous to ski wihout brakes which deploy. I can garentee you if you got caught you would have your pass taken and rightly so.

Also why risk losing your skis for the sake of not getting the correct brake. I watched a guy searching for his ski for over an hour yesterday, as it went flying off into the trees when his brake did not work. Losing a ski is far more expensive then replacing a brake.

Unfortunately none that I (or the shop guys who I trust) know of.. The only option is to replace the heel piece, which is annoying and expensive.






^^Also I won't get my pass revoked, but I appreciate your concern. And I don't get wider brakes because they would literally explode after a run or two. Ski brakes were just not designed with the type of riding we do now in mind; there's no way a brake can withstand switch falls/landings, it wasn't made to.

^but having a non functional brake because you cant land switch is not the answer.

You need brakes mate, its simply not worth the risk. If you break them alot invest in some bindings like the salomon STH, where it is incredibly easy and usually cheap to replace the brakes. Skiing without is not an option.

I have Atomic FFG 12's and the break is always coming off, maybe every 5-10 runs or so, but I can screw it back on pretty easily... Is this alright?

Pretty sure the STH brake arms have a larger diameter to them aswell. I've tweaked mine many times, but they haven't snapped yet.

I ride STH 16s, I still don't want to be replacing the brake after every session. I've been doing this for a long time, I appreciate the advice but I think I've got the situation under control.

I had to get my FKS's warrantied 3 times in one year. One of the times I snapped the leg on the heel, the other I completely fucked the breaks, and the last time I pulled out like 3 pieces including the half moon. Yeah I pretty much go ham.

I catch my FKS brakes on switch landings all the time. I broke one yesterday. You can always crank your din and forward pressure up so your heel won't lift and drop the brakes slightly on hard landings, but I like having ligaments in my legs. It is a balance of finding the right setting to heep your heel down when landing switch, and still release nicely when you tweak your leg. I usually err on the side of looser, which means I will snag my brakes sometimes. It is just the perils of having a binding with ridiculous amounts of elasticity.

The degree of carelessness required to ski around without working brakes, with forethought given to the fact that it could injure someone, means that if your ski came off and shot down the hill and killed some kid you would be culpable for manslaughter. Or absolutely liable in any other case, and probably, due to the level of negligence involved, you would get slapped with some pretty significant punitive damages as well. Just gonna throw that out there.

i break/bend breaks the whole fucking time, as stated they are not designed for switch landings, that said i also break skis, both my pairs of have had some type of serious edge damage and will probably not last another season.

you just need to get good at doing cheap repairs, hand make your brakes if necessary, blow torch plus metal rods.(as long as you dont fuck the plastic)

skiing is an expensive sport and if you charge you'll always break stuff, its the reason i'm never gonna get a new pair of current season skis.
