I guess I could test this but thought i'd just ask. On the Hero3's, if you delete all files from your card using the gopro itself, it also reformats the card. Will this also remove the firmware update?

the point of a firmware update being on your micro SD is to transfer it to the non volatile memory on the device itself. Once the device has been updated there is no longer any need to keep it on your removable storage (Micro SD).

I wasnt sure if the device had any internal memory... mainly because I was under the impression that you cant even cycle the menu without a card in. I assume this transfer from sd to internal is automatically done in the update process then, because I checked the sd and there are no files on it after updating then reformatting/deleting (and I did not move any).

The non volatile memory in any device is not meant for storage of your files(I take that back....in MOST devices it is not meant to save that kind of stuff. But I work with some industrial automation devices that do. but it's kind of different than a GoPoro).
It's like the BIOS on a computer motherboard. In a device like the GoPro it is used for the actual operation of the camera. Not the storage of your video files. If the GoPro has internal media to store your video that would be seperate from the non volatile memory.
