My ski "buddies" suck

So I usually go up to the mountain (mammoth from LA since bear and high suck) with my best friend I've known for years who snowboards. However he sucks. Never wants to hit pow unless it has snowed 4 feet, always wants to lap the learner park when things are great elsewhere, takes beer breaks every other hour. I really enjoy hanging out with him off the hill, but he sucks on the hill. I wish it were as easy as finding a new crew but I don't make it up very often and he and I usually carpool. Do I split off from him and ski on my own part of the day and try and not be a dick about it? Do I suck it up and deal with his slowness even though I know it's stalling my progression? What you y'all think?

Heck, it's skiing I would take it any day over not.. But yeah just ask if you can keep shredding on his break or if he wouldn't mind if you go do a couple laps on a different run and meet up in like 15 20 mins. I'm sure he would be cool about it,

My favorite part of skiing is enjoying my amazing times with my homies by my side. Have you tried compromising at all?

I know the feeling. I'm not trying to brag but I am a much much better skier than all of my buddies. It sucks not being able to ski the terrain I want to ski because its above my buddies' abilities. I want to ski trees and chutes and bowls but I know one of my friends will end up hurting themselves if they try and follow me. It also sucks not having anyone to lap the park with because none of my friends can hit rails and jumps, or have any interest in learning to. And its not just like I can get a new ski crew. My friends that I ski with are my roommates and my best buds I carpool and hang out with. I'm just way more into skiing than all of my buddies. Skiing with them is always fun though, so I really can't complain too much.

None of my friends ski so I don't really have this problem. On the flip side, I don't save anyone pushing me to progress

my friend that i usually ski with just bitches all day about how much he hates skiing and how he is never skiing again, don't assume skiing with a friend will make you want to progress.

op...I have the same prob. My best friend and my ski partner passed away about 4-5 years ago. All of my other friends are gapers and do the exact same things you described. My new solution to the problem is I don't wait anymore. I end up skiing by my self half the time, and usually end up taking a chair up with my buddies a few runs later, which is as long as it takes them to get down one run. At first my buddy asked me to wait for him at the bottom, that's when I looked around and it was snowing and there was no one in the lift line. I called him, told him that I will meet up with him in an hour at a certain lift. Works good.

First of all, I would kill to ride Bear, go there. As for your friend situation, just split your time between doing your own thing, and cruising together. And when you're with your friend take the opportunity to work on little things you want to improve on.

This. Especially the Bear bit. Also has it occured to you to just make some ski friends? Like talk to other guys around your level and spin some laps with them... just because he's your best friend doesn't mean you have to ride with him all the time.

i would honestly recomened saving up ( since you car pool ) for gas money so you can go by yourself to a full day. just bring some fresh tracks on the i pod, a lil bud maybe, and just shred and do what you want . i know skiing by yourself all the time can suck. but if my friends are being flaky bout skiing the next day ( yeah i always make sure they know what time to meet me and get there lazy asses up ) , like saying , " ill prob go , hit me up in the morn. " yeah well you know what that means. .. just save some gas money go by yourself and c how much fun you have, also ive met and rode with some of the most coolest , interesting people ever on the chair, and if there by themselves and around your age and seem like they can ride, ask if they wanna take a run. my advice is just to try this, then reconsider what to do bout you slow ass friend . and remember, aint no fucking friends on a pow day !

I'm from Oklahoma and it's hard to find people to go with because the closest ski resort (Santa Fe) is about an 8 hour drive. I go with a lot of people that are first-timers or beginners so I'll spend about half the time with them and half the time skiing by myself. I missed a a few trips because of people flaking so I said eff it and started going by myself from time to time. I'll usually makes friends with locals or other skiers at the bars so I have people to ski with. Maybe it's time to move to a different state. I wonder if there are any other Okies posting on here...

To make things more clear, I really do appreciate that I have someone to carpool/ride with. I also am grateful that I live close to bear and mt high and summit and mammoth (not to mention HB and San Onofre and Trestles). I feel like we are spoiled here in Southern California. I have never complained to him about this stuff and do ride on my own quite often. You can meet a lot of interesting people riding chairlifts solo. He and I are really close friends and will be indefinitely. Albeit he is not the greatest ski "partner". I think I am going to compromise and ride with him half the time or so and alone/solo the rest.
