What about hunting and target shooting? I live out west so I know tons of people who own guns to hunt and target shoot. I'm guessing you live in the east or midwest and have limited exposure to guns, because its ignorant to assume that guns are used for nothing but killing and causing misery. Shooting trap is a really fun and competitive sport that has nothing to do with having a gun to "act like a badass" or kill people. I have friends who do it competitively. I also have friends who compete in biathlons and own rifles. Should they have their freedoms limited because a couple of nutcases killed people with guns?
I'm pretty liberal but I hate how a lot of liberals attempt to regulate the world to safety. Would the U.S. be SLIGHTLY safer if all guns are banned? Probably but the number of lives saved would be minuscule compared to the number of people killed in car accidents or from tobacco each year. On the other hand a large number of law abiding citizens who own guns for legitimate purposes would have their freedoms reduced. (I agree with you that the self defense argument is pretty much bullshit except in some limited cases.) Banning everything dangerous should not be the purpose of government.
Banning alcohol would result in a safer society than banning guns. Why not argue for that?
"Those who can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety."
- Ben Franklin
"I'm a firm believer that our world needs to stay open. Our world is so full of regulation it really mutes who we are as human beings and who we are as a society."
- Rob Gaffney, M.D.
The last thing we need is more regulation, even if it means our lives are a little more dangerous.
And if you think that the huge majority of gun users don't own guns for recreation and use them safely and responsibly you are sheltered and uninformed.
