Not really. Its entirely possible to dislike a personality type, and still be okay with their sexual orientation.

For instance, you could say "holy shit, that Steward is annoying as shit with his lisp and his pink scarf" and not be homophobic, you're hating his personality and behavior. But if you said "holy shit, that Steward is an annoying ass faggot with his lisp and pink scarf and anal sex. I hope he can't adopt kids or get his partner's life insurance." then that would in fact be homophobic.

See the difference?

i think the fight is more against discrimination. not equality. obviously gay=/=straight.

but I think that most gay men would identify themselves as male. Since the names are blue or pink based on gender and not sexual orientation I would say it would make more sense to have this thread for a transgender person or somthing.

but I don't care. I'll sign the petition. As long as LOVENINJA wants it I think it would be cool!

Good point. Unfortunately society has sort of "taught" us that lisps, pink, etc on guys are all associated with gays/femmy guys. I think the overly flamboyant lispy guys are just looking for attention and they bug the hell out of me. But so does any obnoxious person in general. I respect the normal person that happens to be gay just like a respect the normal person who is straight.

On a lighter note, at the time of making this thread, Loveninja was the only openly gay NSer I knew about. But the rainbow name petition will be ratified to include all gay members of NS so don't fret!

Not really. Pardon the elementrary example I'm using, as the focus should be on the individual. This is not a macro analysis. I hope you can play devils advocate with me and dig a little deeper before you make strong judgments. (Also note I have difficulties in shaking my determinism in moral philosophy)

You know that kid who always acted like a bully in school? He pushed you around and it seemed as if he had no emotions. Well education (via schools, television, books, etc) tells us this bully probably had a rough situation at home. His father was a drinker, he may have had no parents and ended up in a less than nurturing home, or the kid could have had some pretty traumatic experience early in his life. Some how this confused neglected kid was in an environment that fostered his bullying tendencies. One could easily say that nobody forced him to bully, but that is to deny many externalities that affect our decisions. If psychology has taught us anything, things are much more dynamic than we think. If epistomelgy has taught us anything, there are lots of things we are not certain of.

With this being said we should look at the ends the means of judgment brings. I am never going to deny that judging someone can be an exeternality for better decisions, but are you judging someone to coax them into better decisions? There was a video that has been posted on here a few times that demonstrates babies showing bias towards things they like. That could be a valuable tool in our discussion. Just from empirical knowledge, most people place judgments prior to a reasonable analysis of the individual.

I'm not asking you to go and analyze everyone you meet, but please do suspend any lasting judgement until you have done such a thing. Placing judgments because you are indifferent in ideas (which may present themselves as actions) with oneself isn't very nice. mmkay?

But for the point made in your post you used an example of not getting mad at a bully because his home life might suck. That's the stupidest shit I've ever heard. You can judge someone without saying anything. I can dislike annoying people-- me disliking them doesn't harm anyone.

Also my brother is an asshole bully and he grew up in a perfectly nurturing and well-rounded home.

But what if they don't want it? We are assuming that all gay members want this name because why? Are you gay, do you know for a fact they want the name? Maybe you do know they want it.. but if that's the case let them fight the battle for it. I'm tired of seeing people get all butthurt or up in arms about things that aren't even about them, they just think whoever they are fighting for will appreciated their efforts and respect them.
