Cool little avalanche informational tool

Yeah for sure - but what it does do is show a completely uneducated person that you can't just walk anywhere on the mountain. That type of info for the absolutely completely in the dark people is a great start.

I mean its not obvious if you don't know shit that you can't just walk up anywhere on the mountain. That may seem stupid to those who know this stuff, but its not like on the east coast you have to choose where you walk up the hill to be safe.

it's also helpful in pointing out the difference between the most direct/easiest route and safest route. also, the large scale point of view is what you're faced with a lot of the time when determining your route.

I've come across this before, and it's pretty cool. Funny thing though is that when avalanche danger is 'considerable' in the alpine (like during this exercise), most of my touring buddies and I wouldn't go near the majority of that terrain. A lot of those zones are near where I live too so I already know the 'correct' route to the top... I guess you could call that cheating?



As for the sound of the jetpack setting off avalanches - I think Mythbusters busted that. Well, they busted the myth that a human voice can set off an avalanche, but perhaps a jetpack is loud enough? Perhaps they need to revisit the scenario!

I do know that at some point sound can trigger an avalanche. I forget where, but somewhere in North America they do avalanche control with a helicopter, but instead of explosives they have this thing on a long line that sends a intense sonic pulse at the mountain and the sound vibrations trigger the slide. I doubt a jetpack has that kind of oomph.


On a slightly unrelated topic... you seen those jetpacks that run on water or whatever? Imagine one that runs on snow? Oh man.
