Stiff vs. flexy

So I know stuff skis generally are more stable on jumps, but what about little jumps that pop up sharp and fast? I have pretty flexy skis and sometimes on those I get air flail and land backseat. Is stiff better for those kind of jumps as well?

stiff is better for all jumping.

I'm not the jump guy, thus I really like buttery skis that are good for all sort of butters and of course for jibs they're more forgiving...

stiff skis in general are better for bigger jump and jumps in general, I say...

stiff, heavy, flat, bad edges, impossible not make propper turns...

I was thinking soft would be better for those sharp small ones, but since you're having problems stiff might be the way to go.

Yeah, so don't laugh but I've actually been rocking Line Shadows (163 womens) as my first twin tips for the past three years. I'm 5'10" 150lb. and they are super light/good for spinning, but it's too easy to wash out on the jumps. I think it's time to save up and treat myself, because I'm starting to really throw down off the big boy jumps and frankly my ski doesn't match my skill.

Did you just describe them as stiff?? :o

a'bangs are floppy, lackluster, ugly as fuck, noodles. And they are really slow.

well i use race skis which are REALLY stiff and they work just fine for me on jumps. i wouldnt mind trying a jibbing ski sometime in the near future though!

yes, compared to the scott rebels I was riding they were siff AF, especially since I expected something buttery as f*ck with they're name and marketing and stuff...

but yes, forgott to mention they're hella slow, too

I do understand very well what I'm talking about. since it is my very personal experience! Agreed, they're softer than e.g. Salomon Suspects, but I found them not as buttery as people claimed them to be. They had supergood pop though, can't disagree on that one (carbon-ollie-string-thingy...).

OP you should also make sure your skis are the right size. Your skis can be as stiff as you want but if they're too small for you you're still going to wash out

It was just my fucking experience you fucking ignorants!!! See, when I rode them, I didn't find them buttery at all. Maybe I've ridden a pair of old, rotten, unusable ones, but for fuck's sake, it's what I felt my very own! Get at me, fuckers

Stiff skis=better skis in my opinion. But then again I raced as a small child so stiff skis are just more comfortable to me. My moment teams are a good mix. They are one of the stiffest park skis I've ridden but yet they still flex if you want them too

youre gunna want a nice pair of stiff skis. make sure theyre long enough too. Personally i like a big ski, solid underfoot and stiffer then soft. it makes for a really good feel.
Just my opionion tho

I really like my APO hutches. they are medium-soft, a perfect compromise IMO.

They butter really well, but also stomp big landings and hold an edge well on groomers.

I see no reason to get an extremely stiff ski. Buttering and pressing is so much fun, and washing out on hard backseat landings is better than getting shin bang anyway.

I've never been particularly serious in the park, but I like to have fun all over the place. Butters, random little jibs and whatnot. I'm a large human being (6'4" and about 260) and for a long time I was skiing on og K2 Fujatives (the red one's) and they were pretty much the softest ski ever. Did I get the greatest performance possible from them? Probably not, but they were super fun.

I've seen people switch nose manual on afterbangs like they were the softest skis on earth. But its all relative. If you can't flex the ski fully then you're not going to get the full pop out of it. If you are too heavy or ski too agressively then a soft ski won't give you that ideal pop either. Its like you are harry potter and you're trying to find the right wand.

Pop is more about elasticity. I've ridden stiff skis that pop and stiff skis that didn't. The quicker a ski can return to its natural shape (elasticity), the more pop it has. Generally, stiffer skis pop more than soft ones. But the elasticity depends on the type of wood used in the core and things like rubber dampers too. For example, a race ski is super stiff but not exactly poppy because it's designed to be dampened for high-speed stability.

I think the only way to determine if a ski is poppy enough for you is to ride it. Bear in mind that a small guy on a soft ski will have a similar pop to a big guy on a stiffer ski, considering that both skis have a similar core structure.

Flexy buttery skis!!! i have stiff skis and i really want buttery skis..sure stiff skis are better for big air, but unless you're doing jumps 50+ i think buttery skis would be better in general.

stiff skis are better for the majority of things. unless if you only ride rails and small jumps and never leave the park a stiffer ski will give you better performance. Especially if you want to ski anything steep and hit cliffs and stuff, stiff skis are the way to go. That being said, stiffness is relative so don't go too stiff to the point that you have no forgiveness.

Softer skis are the way to go for me since I'm a pretty light skier. I like my skis long though, so you get the best of both worlds, playful flex yet a stable ride due to the length.

thats what i thought, until i hurt my knee on some major backseat. I have not been able to ski for a week now, might prefer shinbang over that one.

That being sad, i still think a softer ski is more fun as long as you dont hit anything over 50ft. Im on a pair of k2 domains right now (pretty soft) and they are so much fun to ride. Im only 5 8'' 145 though so they are not too flexy
