IPhone 5 problem take three

So I finally figured out why most of my post was disappearing, and this one should work.

For the third time...

Whenever I ski or go outside in general, and its pretty cold outside, my iPhone 5 either shows very low battery or dies completely and won't turn on until warmed up or plugged in. My iPhone 4 never did this. Does this happen to any of you who have an Iphone 5? If it's unique to my phone I'll try to warranty it, if not I'm selling it because a Minnesotan can't have a phone that doesn't work in the cold.

weird, cold temps normally drain battery but not as fast as you're describing. How long does the phone take to die once you bring it out in the cold?

This literally just happened to me tonight. Don't bother changing cases because it happened to me in an otter box. I'm going to wear sweatpants under my snowpants and put my phone in my sweatpants pocket so it's up against my body heat. Hopefully that will work.

My friend has a iPhone5 And hasn't had a problem like this at all. Maybe try putting it in a warmer pocket or wrapping it in something warm and put it in your pocket or go out and buy a thin but warm glove and put the iPhone in the glove in your pocket to try keeping it warm. Try something like that before warranty to see if anything helps.

It varies a lot. And the battery isn't actually drained, the phone just thinks the battery is drained. If I warm it up it returns to the original battery level that is was at indoors after a while.

I Just posted in both of the threads you created..

Same thing happened to me in killington lady sundry when it was freezing out with my 5. I pulled it out of my pocket on the second run and it said I needed a charge; I knew I had battery! I had a suspicion it was the cold. Similar to extreme heat..

It turned it back on in my truck after putting in my jeans pocket, waiting a whole and plugging it in a
charger..

Also gonna throw a hand Warmer in that pocket and use it as well!

I since bought a otterbox on amazon for starters. Eventually lifeproof in the future.

i think that has to do with how the batteries are made
they probly need heat or at least warmth to preform as well as the company intends, and if it gets cold the lithium in the battery probly loses its conductive properties which would make it die or lose its power for a period of time

After coming in from skiing tonight my phone had 16% battery then shut off due to cold. When I turned it back on, it had 36% battery and worked fine. It hadn't happened before, but it was -5 degrees tonight...

so twice something simliar has happened to me. ill be using it (iphone 5) on the lift to change songs or something and it will say i have like 60% battery, then it will random jump to like 10% and die. then ill plug it in in the lodge or something and it will turn right on and say like 59%. or it will randomly jump back to 60% after just plugging it in or letting it sit. its weirrrrrddd.

Ya it happens to me when I don't put it in a warm pocket. The slim, metal phone case and efficient battery isn't designed with extremely cold temps in mind. My 3GS was always working so hard it was warmer than the 5, although I did have it turn off on me once or twice as well on super cold days. A warmer pocket should help out, the battery isn't actually draining and your phone isn't broken. Consider that wind chill while skiing makes it much much colder than the static temp and your phone can turn into an ice brick in minutes.

I have a similar situation with my 4s.
Except with mine when it's cold and i take 1-3 photos my phone will shut off and go to the "plug into power" mode. Then i'll just go into the lodge, warm it for a couple minutes, then it works. It can be seriously annoying though. Because it'll happen even when it's like 40 degrees (Fahrenheit) but yeah, if anyone can find a solution (since Google sucks when it comes to this) throw it out there lol.

ya i keep mine on the inside pocket of my jacket which i just a shell and it stayed surprisingly warm. probably about 15 degrees out and i don't think my phone was cold once when i took it out
