Aurora Theater Invited Victim Families to Its Re-opening (Really)

'Cinemark, the company that owns the movie theater in Colorado where James Holmes went on a shooting rampage last July, apparently thought it was a good idea to invite the families of the Aurora victims to an "evening of remembrance" with free movie tickets when the mall cineplex re-opens on January 17. They were wrong. "The parents, grandparents, cousins and widow of nine of the 12 people killed released a letter sent to the theater's owner" calling it a "disgusting offer," reports the AP. Part of the reason the families are so disgusted is that they claim Cinemark has "refused to meet with them one-on-one without lawyers present." '

Fail. Classless. Are their PR people idiots?

I don't really see why this was such a bad idea. I mean, it was better than not giving them the offer. They were just trying to be considerate.

Considerate would be meeting with family members of the victims without lawyers present, not giving them free tickets to the movie theater where their relatives were gunned down.

what would meeting 1 on 1 without lawyers present do? It's not as if cinemark is a guy who accidentally left the door open and let the shooter in and they need an apology from him. how is cinemark at fault at all for what happened?

Cinemark is a company. They need to reopen their theater to make money. Having a memorial type thing is appropriate, as is inviting the families. But any expectation that the theater is not going to resume operations is ridiculous.


12 people died watching a movie. Unfortunate? Very. But the world doesn't stop turning, which is what these people expect.

I think more than anything all the families wanted to hear was that the theater owner was sorry for their loss. "Come see a free movie and don't forget to register your tickets" is not very sympathetic.

And if their counsel did tell them to not meet with the families without them present, that's fine, but then don't go and then invite them to the re-opening. Bad, BAD PR.

I can understand that the theater was probably a long-term lease or owned by the company and that it was in the best interest of the business to open sooner rather than later, but they could have handled this so much better.
