Agreed. NoobsWhacker is the reason I visit this thread. Great shots. I always have a million questions after seeing his posts though. Both those wooden boats look fucking awesome.
I have not been flyfishing for over 2 weeks. Life sucks. I need to get my feet in the water like Meow.
the infamous mighty mo has some monster browns in it. Caught these the other day. The first was over 25". It was a monster. And one of the most beautiful fish I have seen. I released him because he seemed so at peace at being a fish. The last fish I caught was a 20" fish that I ended up keeping cause the fly was in his jaw like something fierce. The first fish that I killed since I was about 6. Caught them both with the biggest streamer I could find, about 3" long. I was alone so I wasnt able to get very good pictures. Wish I got a better picture of the first, it was an awesome fish. Maybe next time though Ill bring someone with.... NAHHHHHH
anybody out in CT fly fish? where do you go? The only really good place i've fished out here is the farmington, but i live like an hour away. I want to go back to yellowstone soo bad after going back to fishing in CT.
Skipped class last Thursday and went out with my roommate to try fly fishing for the first time. He knows his stuff, so he showed me some basic casting techniques and such and showed me how to get my rig set up and what not.
Shit. Was. Cash.
I snagged one little rainbow and threw him back in after damn near pissing my waders with stoke. Got another slightly larger rainbow, and was again giddy like a school girl. Wound up bagging 3 total, the last of which being a fat, at least 17" rainbow which we kept for dinner. Made up some immaculate fish tacos that night and feasted something fierce.
I love it, it's fun as hell. Any tips for a newbie are happily accepted!
It can be expensive but there are more affordable options. You can find good deals at outlets on rods or even from LL Bean retail, plus with LL Bean it has a lifetime guarantee. The Orvis Outlets have relatively good deals, although still somewhat pricey, the quality is tough to be beat. Allen Fly Fishing is another more affordable retail option.
Flies are pretty cheap and its not too hard to tie your own once you get into it. When you're tying your own flies it cost you probably 10 cents to tie a fly. Flies are a hell of a lot cheaper than lures.
When you start off you don't need waders either, I didn't have them for my first year of fly fishing. Especially if you live in a warmer climate or are fishing in the summer. Wet wade in board shorts or swim trunks.
I bought a high quality setup (rod, reel & line) from an Orvis outlet in VT for about $200 three years ago. I imagine it's completely realistic that you could get a setup for under $100 from LL Bean or Cabelas.
Also, Craigslist is a great place to find fly fishing gear, there are tons of older fly fisherman that are trying to get rid of good gear or perhaps someone that bought gear and realized they didn't really love it.
I've gotten to mess around with other peoples kits before and I have access to some great equipment that I could buy. I just have way to many hobbies eatin' up my dough.
DeebieSkeebiesI live right by the provo river and want to get into it so bad. it's mowhere near as pricey as skiing, yes?
actually i think i spend more $$$$ fishing
but, i prefer to road trip and float fish out of a boat.
Out of state licesening is pricey
as is hiring a guide or obtaining charter vessel aint cheap.
then again like skiing a grand or so will get ya set up pretty nice.
but flyfishing is the crack cocaine of fishin
it can consume you being and make the $$$ fly out of the wallet in a hurry

But like skiing it can be done on the cheap. I caught over 50 trout last year(shit claim I know) and it was my first year seriously fly fishing. I used a 25 dollar eagle claw fly rod and a martin reel I got in a rod/reel combo pack for 50 bones. Get a few elk hair caddis and some wooly buggers and poppers and I guarantee you'll at least catch something.
Ya might not end up with picks like SFB here but you'll have a great time.
Also, SFB your pics are the shit, hell of a life you're living there man, winning for sure.

If you aren't going crazy on trips it is definitely cheaper. Pick up a couple hundred dollar rod/reel combo, $50 fishing license, and probably ~$100 on flies and you'll be good to go.

As a total nub to fly fishing what would you guys recommend as far as a basic setup? I'd mostly be fishing at the russian-kenai river confluence (if anyone knows where that is) and other rivers around where I live.
just cause i don't take roofin pics doesn't mean my oldman ass aint up
removin or applying said products most of the week to get away and pursue them fishes in the cool places they inhabit and try n snap a few pics
At times i miss guiding, but it changed fishing 4 me.
Just as if all i did was fish i'm not sure if i could maintain the passion.
It's a balance of passion and bullshit that needs to occur to support those passions.
