April 1st was the opener for trout in NY. It was abnormally cold, about 35 degrees with gusts of wind up to 30 mph. Still got out from about 9:30 am to about 7 pm. Great day fishing even though we didn't catch any fish all day. Only saw three people with fish all day, but it's still early and I can't wait to sling some more flies when it's 65 degrees out

Yeah I have a few friends that are WAY into it, so I will pick their brains for sure when the time comes. 

I really just want a small setup to hit streams and rivers near where I live and work though, lots of cool spots.

Anyone ever had any experience with a Sage Vantage. I'm looking to buy a new rod and am looking at Sage Vantage, TFO Lefty Kreh Prof II, Redington Voyant, and St. Croix Imperial. Thinking of getting a 3wt for small streams. If anyone can vouch for these rods it would help my decision immensely.

I have a St. Croix Imperial 5 wt. rod, and I absolutely love it. It's super smooth and breaks down nicely into it's case. I've used it in the Appalachian Mountains in North Carolina and out west in Colorado and New Mexico. I would highly recommend it or any other St. Croix rod for that matter.

this right hur. I have the 4 wt and its one of my favorite rods. In addition, st croix has some amazing customer service. Broke my rod one day, sent it in the next and in about a week I had a brand new rod of the next model.

You can pick up an orvis medium arbor for around 130 bucks, lifetime warranty, mostly, and quality products. Not sure if that's what you're looking for

This summer I'm taking a fly fishing class with my university so I'm pretty excited to learn how to fly fish. Threads for June when I'm actually learning how to do this, but I'm pretty stoked on it.

Last year my buddies and I had the same urge. It is definitely a learning curve. There will be times you want to give up; but, the harder process is to learn,the better it feels in the end. Before last trout season I I thought I wasn't good at knots (you'll be tying plenty of those) but now I can do it with my eyes closed. It is all on youtube. And some of the how-to videos we watched over and over and over, go out practice casting with yarn instead of a hook, then watch the video again. Highly rec youtube vids for knot tying, the picture directions never help me for knots... Our biggest mistake was we all got those shitty rubber, waders built in boots, we didnt know better. Horrible. This past off season went out and got some field and stream waders anglers, all the difference. Important to google fly fishing in your area to start learning about the different insects and methods of fishing... All will come in time

So I went to Canadian tire and got myself a decent fly rod (9 feet I think?) and reel (weighted 6 I'm pretty sure). My grandfather is a very talented angler and he was with me when I got the rod, so I trust that it isn't shit. So where is a good place to start? My grandfather gave me some flies that he tied and don't know where to start. He taught me how to false cast and roll cast but when I went out to some local lakes I kept on loosing flies. Any of you guys have any tips for a beginner?

youtube about the common knots/hatches/, google your problems with fly fishing in search bar. guaranteed even people who consider themselves decent fly fishers have similar issues...

ask you gpa all the time what time of day you should be out there for your area, that is crucial

dont get discouraged, and it is not about how hard you cast it, gotta watch some pros casting on youtube.. I would guess not enough delay in the back cast. Practice just the back cast (1st half of false cast) and watch the fly roll out, if you go for the 2nd half of the false cast two quick you will hear the 2 dollar snap... Practice with yarn in a field or anything but flies ... Pay attention to how the fly rolls out, should look the same forward and back.

I'm sure a few of you know about them but definitely search for the Orvis Fly Fishing Podcast by Tom Rosenbauer. Awesome tips whether you're just starting off or you've been fishing for 10 years. Most of the tips are geared towards intermediate fisherman. Some of the podcasts are aimed at more introductory concepts while others are more advanced. They're great to listen to in the car and most run between 45 minutes and an hour. There's tons archived on Itunes.

Moving up to mammoth for 2 years and I know next to nothing on fly fishing. I've spent my time mostly with baitcasters. Nothing better then a wide open calico bite or smallies drifting down the Colorado river through the desert.

My buddies first of the year. On a stone wet fly at the Neversink River in NY. About 13 inch brown trout. First out of my friends to get one, great to get out there today. Nymphin again tomorrow

I don't know if much has been said about this yet, but Spey Fishing is so much fun and basically it's like a level up from fly fishing. A spey rod is a large, two-handed fly rod used to catch salmon and steelhead usually used in the Pacific Northwest. I'll post some pics later and if you have any questions pm me! It's my new favorite thing ever.

Think I'm gonna do a little more bug research this year and try and improve my trout fly fishing tactics and skills.

Southeast PA north of philly. Not exactly the fly fishing mecca of PA but we got some streams too.

Hoping to hit the delaware and lehigh at different points this summer.

Weird because for me the order is Ice Fishing, bait casting, fly fishing... Can't say I've ever fly fished though so yeah haha... I have all the stuff I need for it, I just like bait casting or just using a lure..

Check out your local fly fishing shop or Gander mtn and YouTube and get the ball rolling, you won't regret it!

Was out from yesterday afternoon till the sun started going down and the fish were rising like crazy. Getting red hot. Mid-Hudson/Southern NY area yehhhhhh c'mon

Took 4 natives on a fly yesterday here at my local small stream just south of Allentown PA. No idea what was hatching, no idea what I was fishing with. Just caught a hatch bug a couple days ago then went to the fly shop and grabbed a couple that looked close. A new leader helped out as well.

I'll start taking more picture soon haha. None of em were keepers anyway, all four were about 4-6 inchers.

Im picking up fly fishing this summer. My dad used to do it for years and said i can have all his gear. I've been out just spinner fishing the past week but trout season just started here today and i'm getting myself some waders later today. Super stoked to get out!!

No fly fishing but A TON of lake fishing so far... Not too much river fishing, only 1 trout so far anyway.

Been catching some solid 2 pound bass for a few days now (Just started to get warm enough in CT for the LMB's to come out of the depths...) Still waiting for some hogs though, like 3.5 pound + .. Going out today with another NSer we'll see who wins the tourny.

Pickerel, perch, crappie, bass and bluegill are all fair game, I got the scale and all.

Rivers are open here, just super muddy so fly fishing wont work right now. Lakes still have ice on them but that should be gone in 2 weeks. Just loading up on new gear. Jealous of all you guys fishing already.
