you can get a free trial of Avid media composer on their website. Probably your best bet seeing as the industry uses media composer and ever since X, final cut has went to shit.

I use movie maker... but then again I'm not really doing anything but screwing around with some gopro footage so I'd say don't do it if you want to do anything serious.
