freeze sucks. bad. Talk about a magazine behind the times, devoid of good content, and formulaic as all hell.
Holy shit, what's freeze gonna be this year? Hmm, gear review issue, photo issue, summer camp issue, competition issue, etc. Real fucking creative.
How about columns? Ask Brad? The guy's a washed up douchebag that hasn't progressed anything in years. So far behind the times in freeskiing it isn't even funny.
What else? A few pages of news from around the country, standard monthly themes that have been around for years. An interview maybe, shitty reviews, some photos, nothing exciting.
Read a snowboarding magazine. So much random stuff, so many good articles about things you can tell don't come back year to year. Way thicker. Freeze never progressed anything. They've had the same magazine for years. I completely 100% blame them for their demise. Who drove the magazine? Mike Jaquet? Anyone seen that gay thing about dancing in ski movies at the end of Strike Three? Yeah, that guy seemed real cool. Seemed way more like a poser with an english degree than someone with it in the industry to me.
Read eastern edge sometime. Or any snowboarding magazine. Instead of freeze trying to cover the 'mainstream', west coast image of skiing, they should have been diverse, covered local shit, and just in general been way more creative. You know, I've seen a lot of midwest skiing clips on here, enough to tell me that guys there have some game. Why not do an article about them, or even an issue? All freeze is interested in is what the latest huge name pro is doing. Instead of giving up and comers cover shots, all they want to do is keep established names like T-Hall on the cover.
If you want to do a magazine in an industry like freeskiing, you have to be fresh, different, and provide shit that's interesting to everyone. If they write a big article on something like the the Red Bull Big Air, it's cool, but it's very expected. If they devote the same amount of time to some comp in New Jersey, Maine, or Michigan, it will be news to way more people, and thus, more interesting.
Bottom line, I've been reading the same shit for years, so if they lost out and can't publish more issues, I don't give a rat's ass. I'm still planning on going out next year, skiing, and learning new shit. Whether freeze exists or not. Don't cry over this, it's their own damn fault. Ask brad if you want.
