Wut up, long time lurker here. Just wanted to share an experience.
Last year I went to New Zealand for 6 months and had a blast. One of the many incredible hikes that I did was called the Tongariro Alpine Crossing (where mt. doom is for all you LOTR fans).
Well, my buddy Matt drove us to the Tongariro National Park (we're all american students). Now unlike America, they drive on the left side, however Matt was confident that he could drive us. If you know anything about New Zealand, driving can get crazy because the beautiful scenery is quite distracting, but most of all, the roads can become windy and dangerous. Although there were a few very minor scares, we managed to make it there and back safely.
Now fast forward a bit, my friends and I hear on the New Zealand news about a tragic accident involving American students from Boston University who were also studying in New Zealand. The driver was trying to correct his course after being in the wrong lane and ended up crashing their minivan. 3 students died and 5 were injured. These students were all on their way to do the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. It definitely hit us hard. The country is pretty small, so while traveling you meet many students from the United States, so we all had this sort of bond and connection. It really freaks me out when I think back to the time that Matt had driven us to the national park, like shit...that could have been us. This incident occurred around final exams in New Zealand, so that meant that these kids' parents were expecting them home relatively soon...
