What's your setup and what songs are you currently learning?

I have one kit, and my dad has two that he sets up sometimes

My Kit:
7 piece pearl export, but I have it setup as a 4 piece for simplicity's sake (12 and 16in toms, 14in snare, 22in base). I also have the predecessors to the Flying Dragons double pedal (yamaha).

Cymbals:
paiste alpha hi-hats (14in), sabian sound control crash (16in.), zildjian dry ride (20in), and a paiste pst 5 crash (18in.). we also have a zildjian k light ride (18in) but I destroyed that cymbal, and my dad has 2 other cymbals (20in zildjian k ride and 16in h/h medium control sabian crash) that he won't let me use anymore because I would destroy those too haha.

My Dad's Kits:
6 piece Yamaha maple custom (not absolutes), with 10, 12, 14, and 16in toms and a 14in vinnie caliutta (sp?) snare.

4 piece vintage gretsch kit with 12 and 16in toms, and a 14in maple custom absolute snare. He has an iron cobra petal for these, but normally he sticks with the yamaha pedals that I use.

he's also got the same cymbals that I normally use that are listed above, with the addition of a 13in zildjian k hi-hat set.

I just gave my kit to a friend in exchange for a bottle of whiskey because I hadn't played it in 3 years and he needed a practice set at home.

Tama rockstar 7 piece rack mounted, K custom hats, k 20 inch dry ride, k dark ride, and k 14 fast crash, 6" zilbel, 12 inch china, 6 and 8 inch remo rototoms, and a dw-7000 double.

But seriously, that's a sick setup, not a huge fan of Tamas but those cymbals are sick! I love ks but I break cymbals too quickly to justify spending that much on then anymore haha

a lot with cymbals, probably looking at +$1000 for something somewhat decent, but I haven't looked at prices in a while so that could be off.

To the other comment, I fucking LOVE BTBAM, specially blake richardson's drum parts. fucking insane. I really want to try to tackle swim to the moon, but that's going to be hell to try to learn haha. I have obfuscation down somewhat right now, but I could get that smoother for sure as well

Just picked up a Pearl Masters. Usually I would go Tama but some guy used it for a week and I got it on the cheap. Excuse the shitty basement, we just had a flood

nice, I demo'ed the masters once and I loved the sound, especially from the base drum. How do you like having the rack? Personally I've never used one and have heard mixed reviews, but it might be something that i'd be interested in getting sometime in the future

I have a 6 pearl export, with boshphorous cymbals. I basically just play a bunch of tower of power. I also play snare on the UW drumline, and just got contracted to march my second year with the Seattle Cascades. Here's some vids, check 'em out.

Same, I love the bass drum sound. But I do like the rack. I think it makes it more convenient than a ton of cymbal stands. The only thing I dont like is that I can't get the toms any flatter and shallower, but thats because of the drum and not the rack. Overall, it is helpful.

Some beat to shit kit I built over the years. Some of the cymbals are cracked. A nice set of 13 hi hats though that have a nice crisp sound. Most of the cymbals especially the ride ring wayyy too much but fuck it.

I don't play it ever anymore. Got a nice mapex kit at my buddies and we're slowly updating all the cymbals. That's the main jam space. Can play on the deck in the summer, no neighbors for 3 or 4 miles.


My real prized shit that I personally own are all my hand drums. This one djembe I traded a 10 ounce bar of pan american silver to my buddy who had a friend on the AT custom make it for him some where in the boonies of north carolina. Thing is priceless to me. The dude was doing them for around 500 and that was years ago. My friends recently destroyed the skin so I'm going to have a good friend work on it this spring for summer terrr.


Have 3 or 4 more djembes. I bought this hand made fiberglass doumbek over the summer from a friend. I've been really partial to that for festivals and traveling, especially after somebody fucking killed my favorite drum. It's synthetic but it's still hand made with love. I like it because it has a nice crisp sound the way I have it tuned and I can play it any time. The humidity will fuck with a lot of synthetics bad, and even through off regular skins to an extent. I like that this thing sounds good even outside at night when the dew rolls in.


I fucking love drums. It's my life even though I haven't played in a band in years. I always have a couple in my car for the rode. So many good jam sesh's along the way. Got a chance to play with Barber from the disco biscuits this summer. A little bit of luck and having a drum on hand never hurts.


Every once in a while a friend will ask me to sub in on the kit for a band. Or sometimes my friends will all be home and we'll play somewhere, it just isn't often. I guess you kind of have to choose one, and I chose to travel around randomly for now. It's fun, but I really wish I could get on the kit more often.

Ludwig 6 piece, all black. It was a started kit but I added toms and replaced some. Ended up sound amazing but then I sold it for my skis. Had to do it

Numbers in inches

Toms: 8, 10, 14, 16
Bass: 22
Snare:14
The toms had evan G2s on batter side and evans G1s on resonate side. Bass and snare had special heads but cant remember the names of them.

Crashes: 14, 16, 17
Hi Hats: 14
Ride: 20
Others: 8 splash, 22 & 18 China
Various Paiste and Zildjian cymbals but the 22 inch china was a Wuhan.

I love progressive rock so I would always be learning some TOOL songs or Opeth songs, making stuff of my own up, or jamming with my best friend. I was pretty good, but wasnt close to being really amazing. I could do rhythms when using my double pedal and do 32nd note fills and such or throw in triplets, play in odd time signature and feel the music very well. I miss my drumming and just screwing around on my set but i got a good price for it and had to get skis that werent urban condition

God I wish I stuck with drumming, I played for 2 years and a badass teacher who taught me so much and I had a blast jamming with but I never stuck with it. Definitely one of my bigger regrets

Since you're in PA you should go to the allentown DCI shows in August. It's probably one of the best drumcorps shows out there, and every corps in the country is there.

I have a really simple Pacific Drums jazz setup right now. 2 crash cymbals, a ride, hi-hat and china cymbal-(all Zildjian K series)

And I've really just been into playing really simple vibey music like The StepKids.

wrong again. Neil Peart is great technically, but he doesn't really have much style or a good groove. Looks robotish when he plays.

personally, I love stewart Copeland's style. He looks so happy when he's playing too haha

Lastly, Although I wouldn't say he's the best or really anywhere close, Blake Richardson throws down some of the sickest beats in his incredibly long songs as the drummer of Between the Buried and Me. Take a listen

Anyone ever play electric kits regularly? Have any recommendations?

I want something I can play 24/7 both for practice and as an outlet. Tapping on random shit just inst enough and I don't feel like having the cops called for blasting away on my drum kit at all hours.

Just walk into guitar center and jam on the shit they have setup and see what you like. I got an 8 person drum circle going one time, fun stuff. But anyways, I think the Vdrums are standard? Not really into electric so I'm not too sure.

You got that drum fill at 6:23 of DIM? Vids or it didn't happen. Awesome if you can. I have tried learning a few BTBAM songs on guitar, but I don't have the patience to get through a whole song given the fact that they are A. fucking hard and B. very long. I just end up learning parts of songs.

Nearest guitar center is an hour and a half away. Not sure the next time I'll be around there and have free time.

I'm not really into it either. Just need something I can jam on at 3 in the morning. I don't plan on using it to jam or play gigs. Doesn't have to be epic. I might just grab whatever is a deal that looks decent on CL.

i have a ludwig accent 5 piece in my basement for practice... i mostly use the studio's kits or my best friend has one of the original SJCs.. got tons of cymbals, mostly rides. pride and joy is an Avenue custom snare. maple 5x14 in "smoke blue". fattest jazz sound. that's all i'm really interested in

For the quality, the price isn't bad. Ill prob spend around 1500


Lately I've mostly been learning songs with my band, Vincent the Dog. We are like a psychedelic jam prog rock band and a lot of the songs have crazy time signatures and structures.

As far as covers go, its been Cygnus...Vismund Cygnus and Cassandra Gemini by The Mars Volta, as well as Xenophanes, the entire album by Omar-Rodriguez-Lopez (guitarist from the mars volta that threw away the greatest band ever to play electro-pop-rock)

Gretsch catalina birch. Just got em today. Only cymbal I have worth listing is my 20" zildjian a ride. Grabbing some new cymbals once my funds get rollin again. I could really go for a new bass pedal as well. By the end of the winter I should be in good shape.

electric kits that make the less noise are Roland. Roland are the best anyways if you're getting one and you're a serious drummer (sound wise, feel wise...) but they're expensive.

If you just want an electric kit to bang on every now and then go for the cheapest yamahas: quite cheap (like 500$ for a basic 3tom kit), fairly gd feel and sounds (keep in mind they do make some noise, so if you're in a apartment, don't play at 2 in the morning, if you're in a house play that shit all night long). Don't fucking go with alesis tho, it's like 50$ cheaper and lasts like a year max, shitty sounds, shitty pads, just go with yamaha.

If you live in a house and want both an acoustic to play in the day and electric at night, they exist, but imo they suck (they're a bad electric and a bad acoustic combined, so might as well get a good of one for the same price). I know mapex and pearl make them. If you want an optional soundless kit just get an acoustic and buy some pads to put on (can't remember who, but a company makes them for literally all size of drum parts). It's great for practising when you don't want to wake up the whole town.

picked up a 66 slingerland blue sparkle last summer. keeping my ear to the ground about some nice large/dark K's, maybe some new beats or some small crashes, maple shell pieces, etc.
