I need some assurance...

My dad just had (started about an hour ago) what seems to be a severe muscle spasm in his neck and just went to the hospital in an ambulance. My mom called the doctor and they said to call one for safe measures.
My dad's 48 so they're worried it could be a stroke or heart attack....

Has anything like this ever happened to anyone that anyone knows? I really hope it was just a bad spasm....


P.S. I hope all of your Christmas nights are going better than his (and my family's).

That's not really a common symptom of heart attack or stroke. I wouldn't be worried that it's anything life threatening. I'd be more worried that he has MS or maybe Parkinson's.

My dad had a heart attack in front of me when I was in high school.
We were delivering mulch with our Scout Troop and he just kinda slumped down in the mud randomly and said he was tired. He rolled onto his side then he like couldn't really move.

The EMT peeps thought he pulled a chest muscle or some shit, then he got to the hospital and two of his artieries were clogged and it was a heart attack

He was only 48 and weighs 150. Nothing even close to usual heart attack victims.
I guess its something hereditary in my family that causes heart attacks. He lived but I think its mostly because we were lucky enough for it to happen around Boy Scouts (plus adults who were doctors) that it was able to be recognized as a heart attack.
Whatever.

A friend of mine's dad had a similar incident where he had a spasm in his back, not his neck. They were worried it was heart attack/stroke but he's now living as if it never happened. I hope it's the same in your case man.

Seriously, just consider it a neck spasm until you hear worse news. Heart attacks and strokes usually come with an abundance of other symptoms that make it clear to the doc. They're taking precautions just for that slight "exception" case. Assume the best for now and do your best not to stress. I hope it works out well, I bet it will.

Oh, and when you call the doctor about something like this, they're always going to tell you to call an ambulance. They don't want to be liable for it if somebody dies so they just recommend an ambulance for pretty much everybody.

It's probably nothing.

maybe they dont make it clear, but they usually do come with a lot of other common symptoms. very often there is chest pain/pressure, sickness, cold sweat, or dizziness. Neck pain is just one symptom. I'm trying to give this guy some comfort to take the symptom for what it is until he hears otherwise. Don't be an arrogant douche.

It seems to be that he's gunna be okay thank god. I guess he's at the ER now and is just waiting for the doctor.
He just texted me that too which means he must be doing alright, thank god.

There's a common phrase in medicine that goes something like when you hear hoof beats do you think horses or zebras?

In most cases you think of the worst possible case and prepare for that. Assume it might be a heart attack or stroke and treat accordingly. In this scenario little harm is done. When things go wrong is when you assume it's just muscle soreness or something else benign when in reality it is a heart attack or stroke and you have delayed care.

As an EMT I saw both routes taken on different cases and both outcomes.

It probably is just back spasms but best to assume it's something worse until it can be determined otherwise.

damn hopefully everything is cool. how intense of a neck spasm was it though? Like every day I have some kind of muscle twitching out throughout the day, it's so annoying. lower back has been getting the best of me lately.

He's doing well now and the doctors said it was just a severe muscle spasm in a bad place to have one on his neck. He couldn't move his neck in the slightest without throwing up or passing out. We're glad it was nothing worse but he said it was easily one of the worst experiences of his life.

He's okay now though! He just has to take it easy for a while.
