Nikon J1 gift

For christmas I got a Nikon J1. If you don't know what this is, it is a hybrid of a DSLR, and a point and shoot. It has interchangeable lens, and the one I got came with a kit that includes 10-30mm f/3.5-5.6 and a 30-110mm f/3.8-5.6. The filming capabilities of this camera includes 1080p filming, filming at 30/60 fps. It does not support 24p filming. This camera cost 850 dollars, and I can return it, and use my own money to pay the difference, and get something else like a 60d, or rebel t3i. It is a cool camera, and is a very small size. I was thinking though with this I would never be able to mount on a Glidecam, or attach an external mic. Should I keep this? It seems like a pretty cool small camera. I'd trade it in and get a D3200 with a couple entry level lenses

This. Just pick up a 17-50 or use the kit 18-55 and buy a 50mm or a 8mm.

id keep the j1 its a dope camera

its small yet amazing, great for bringing to parties or just used as a casual camera instead of having a huge dslr to lug around everywhere

Depends on how serious you want to get into photography, keeping the camera is really limiting your ability to go far into filming or photography, although the portability is awesome for somebody content with point and shoots.

I'f it were me I would get a used rebel t2i and a tamron 17-50 non vc, It's not as portable but the features you can get with magic lantern are pretty incredible.

I think what sets this camera apart from many setups (D3200, t2i, 60D, etc..) is that it combines a very small camera body with a very small tele lens (the 30-110 is *tiny*), while maintaining exceptional IQ. This makes it an excellent camera for ski photography and occasional filming, because it's much easier to take with you.

If you will primarily use this camera in places where space/weight is an issue (skiing, hiking, traveling), you should consider keeping it.

In fact, for regular photography combined with the new 18.5mm f/1.8 and the upcoming 32mm f/1.2, the system is far less limited than people say. I've seen far better photos from this 18.5mm than from the Tamron 17-50.

fyi until january 5th, that camera is only $500 on amazon with those 2 lenses as well.

or save some money and choose only 1 lens.

For sure trade it for a DSLR. Much more quality, more lens availability and looking through a real viewfinder makes a difference. I'd buy a D3200 or a T3i. 50mm 1.8 is cheap and they crank out beautiful shots and teach you how to truly shoot good stuff. Much more options on a DSLR
