Help filming in pow

In the past, pow days = hot laps.

I've started touring lately and have a hard shell case (pelican maybe?) that fits in my backpack, and fits 2 lenses, body, and a mic. My steadycam and dolly I made in a machine shop specifically so they'd be small enough to strap to my pack. I use a Velbon Videomate 607 tripod. Its fairly small and incredibly smooth for its price (its the cheapest fluid head I could find, for ~$70), and can strap to my bag as well.

Generally, I bring just the tripod.

Filming when its snowing sucks. I have a rain cover, but its for a GL2 and doesn't do too much for my DSLR.

Be ready to carry big backpacks, and stand around in the cold for along time while the athletes hike the lines. Do pushups, situps, jog in place, hike up and do front flips down the hill, and shit like that to stay warm. The last couple years I have been hiking with my big 70 litre mountain hardwear backpack with my camera gear and tripod stuffed in it. I just bought the f-stop tilopa Bc backpack that is actually made for camera gear, and it is heavenly for hiking gear into the B.C.

But yeah the best advice I can give you is have patience, learn to be fast with skin to ski transitions and getting your gear dialed in so the athletes dont have to wait. And some of the biggest advice is to always bring radios and communicate about the shot, specific locations of landings and turns, and timing with the riders.

It is ALOT harder then filming park. Its actually like a vacation filming park after you get into filming backcountry heavily.

Anytime i've filmed pow (not much recently) just get everything in a decent pack and strap on your tripod (or glidecam, slider, whatever) and just send it. As for snow, if you're worried put a bag over it, otherwise its NBD really.

It's a combination of Dynafit equipment + camping backpack filled with tons of gear + riders who are patient enough to wait while you assemble your tripod + manning the fuck up. I have yet to find a better system.

Yeah I think for my purposes ill just throw my camera shit in a backpack, and strap my tripod to it.

If you worry about breaking shit, put your camera gear in a pelican hard case and cut out the foam to fit all of your stuff exactly and it can take a beating. Just stuff that in your favorite pack. Depending on the camera I wouldn't worry about snow. Most camera gear (especially newer DSLR's) can really take a beating. Check this out if you aren't fully convinced. This video made me cringe but damn does it prove a point.
