my new pair of skis has a chip in the bottom of them its less than an inch wide but it goes in decently deep. i can see the 2 separate layers, is this bad will it affect me?
If #1 - You have skied on them and this probably resulted from knicking something, then either try and get them warrantied or take them to a shop and a qualified tech can repair them with ptex, or, if it is bad with a more aggressive solution.
If #2 - You have not ridden them and they are brand new, get in touch with the company and/or shop you bought them from and investigate the warranty process.
It is hard to evaluate the severity of the damage with measurements and exact location or pictures--which would be more helpful. Snap a few with your cellphone if it can provide good quality.
I should also note that if this happened while riding and they are still under warranty, you may still be able to get a fresh pair of skis from the manufacturer.
HOWEVER, depending on the manufacturer and cause of damage you may or may not get new skis. You probably will, but you will be without skis for a little while unless you have a backup pair.
