Helmet Pads

I have a helmet that is a little big on me. With a beanie, it moves around a little bit. I am thinking about putting the pads from my bmx helmet in it. Should I do this? Would it be better just ro buya new helmet? If so, how should I get the pads to stay in the helmet?

If by pads I am assuming you mean the soft ones. What I do Is just rock no pads and use a thicker beanie instead

But when I have the pads in and a beanie, it moves around. That's what I meant. Sorry that was not clear.

Possibly... But I think it would be close to what I do now which is just rocking turtle fur and putting the strap over the fur. It's tighter but it's still enough to annoy me while skiing.

If you put bigger pads in and you wear a beanie, its not safe because theres too much soft padiing so the hard pading doesnt work. I would just go to a shop and bring your beanie with you and get a new helmet just to be safe. hope this helps

depends, if your just wearing the helmet so you can get into the park, then add some velcro pads from a bike helmet, if your wearing a helmet to protect your head, then i would get a smaller size.

Well I want to protect my head so I will probably end up buying a new helmet. Anyone know of any ones that they like? Thinking about a receptor bug.

I have the receptor bug and its a great helmet. My smith io's work really well with it. I would defiantly recommend it.

if it fits, then it is still a helmet that meets the same safety standards as other certified helmets.

Receptor bug looks dope but there isn't any local POC dealers so I've never tried one on. The Giro Shiv and Giro Revolver helmets are good looking and affordable as well. My revolver came with loads of the soft padding in different thicknesses to get the fit just right.

I would really recommend a new helmet. A proper fit is ESSENTIAL to insuring you get the most of your helmet in a crash. That's not to say slipping a balaclava under there on a cold day would be the end of the world, it wouldn't.

But if you're throwing that much padding under there, I'd check out a new one.

I upgraded from a Giro helmet (had two before and liked them a lot) and now have a Smith Variant Brim and am digging it so far. Works great with Smith goggles.

Thanks sir. Hope you don't mind if I dip my own question in here.

Just wondering if anyone know's if there are measurable safety differences between a helmet with a hard styrofoam lining as opposed to a helmet with BMX style foam that gets progressively harder to compress. I have both styles of helmets and like my BMX styled helmet way more, and it fits more comfortable as well. Wondering if I'm making and major saftey performance sacrifices. I'm assuming that the hard styrofoam lined helmet offers more protection for big spills?

I'm assuming you're wearing a hat underneath your helmet? Depending on what's between your head and helmet you may sacrificing fit, which sacrifices safety.

Basically, the primary difference seems to be from multiple or single impact design. Skiing falls often involve tumbling, rolling, bonking, crashing, sliding............ so snow helmets are designed with that in mind. While, skate/bmx helmets are designed for the big primary impact of the crash.

The biggest and most important thing is the helmet certification of safety which comes in the form of a rating, generally ASTM.

I know a lot people wear skate/bmx helmets on snow, but my personal advice to you would be to get a snow specific helmet.

I just came back to ask this haha. I found a Smith holt on evo in small and i can get it for $25. It says park edition and it doesnt have ear pads. Will it work?

Nah I just wear a super thin balaclava and my goggle strap. Both of my helmets have a thick outershell, so they're definatley multiple impact helmets. Solid post, +K.

I also found the answer to my question on Sandbox's website:

Just click the protection tab and it will all make sense. Looks like I'll wear my 'hardcored' helmet for days where I'm going big and the 'softcored' helmet for easy rail days. And I guess any helmet that fit's is waaay better then no helmet at all right?

This is just me, but I would always wear the "hardcore" helmet. One of my concussions was given to me by a rail, on an "easy" day. Crashes can happen anytime, some of my worst falls have been the ones where I didn't suspect anything could really go wrong.

Though I'm not a neurologist... I would say, yes a helmet is pretty much always a good idea.



To riff on an old adage... (instead of a bird) a helmet on your head is worth two in the lodge. ;)
