The face of style vs. the face of technicality

Last night I watched an incredible documentary, "Rising Son: The Legend of Skateboarder Christian Hosoi." I'm not a skater, so bear with me if I miss details. This doc will probably inspire a few other threads in the future. Right now I'm thinking about the legendary rivalry between Tony Hawk and Christian Hosoi, which was in full force In most of the '80s and '90s. Apparently, if you were a skater, you were either a Hawk follower or a Hosoi follower. Hawk's camp was technicality and just being able to land the trick while Hosoi was pure style. They were the definitive faces of their respective tribes.

I don't think freeskiing has a divide as clear-cut as this, but their definitely is the notion of technicality vs, style. Who do you think are the best candidates for the forerunners of each faction today? I think you gotta go with either Bobby Brown or Tom Wallisch for technicality, but I just can't put my finger on who is leading the style movement.

Also, if you're a skater, I'd be interested to know whether you're a Hawk or Hosoi guy.

tom is an exception since his style's ridiculous. i'd say bobby is the face of tech while someone like henrik is more the face of style

You read my mind to the nth degree. Yeah, Wallisch kind of has too much style, but then again Hawk had some style, too. Bobby Brown gets criticized as a robot. I almost suggested Henrik. I think Brown vs. Henrik is a solid case.

I'm only 18 so I wasn't alive/aware during that rivalry, but was there any animosity between them? Or was it more of a friendly rivalry? Cause most pros are friends, the only two I can think of that probably don't like each other too much still are Simon and Tanner..

Haha or maybe I believe what pros tell me? Every pro I've had a conversation with about Simon says that he's a tool, and most of them say they're heard Tanner talk shit about him at least once in person.

For me EP ooozes style. He doesn't dress a certain way to enhance or act with any sort of swag. He just skis the way he wants too...and if you watch him in propaganda he was gnarly as fuck back then but you can see his style developing even as a park skier.

Right there, going to have to agree with this one. LSM is all about doing shit differently and being stylish. Goepper definitely has done some dope shit but as far as just being stylish with smaller creative stuff he lacks, but they definitely both kill it.

Did know one watch the creep? Clayton Vila had some pretty great style, and its real refreshing from the whole B and E are the only ones with style trend.

I'm not trying to say he is the face of style but I think Maks Gorham is unique, and I'd put him up there with some of the more stylish skiers.
