Help on buying plane tickets

so i need to buy some plane tickets from boston to reno for a trip in about a month or so, and dont know much of anything about how to get cheap plane tickets. im flexible on the day/time/seat/airline/route/whatever, i just want the tickets to be as cheap as possible. when and how is the best to go about doing that?

Morning flights are usually more expensive, as are days that business men and women are traveling ex/ mondays and fridays.  The closer you get to your departure date the more expensive the ticket will generally be. And use kayak.com like the guy above me said its easy to navigate

Kayak.com is shopping around and comparing...
But Also look at Southwest, they're not listed on any of those sites, and often very cheap, plus great for skiers because of no checked bag fees. Of course I got their credit card and got 50000 bonus miles, so I don't have to pay for a Southwest flight for a long time (that's a tip, BTW. Credit card signing bonuses are sometimes huge). Timing is everything too, but its also mainly luck. You kinda have to have a feel for what a low price is to know when to jump on it. You'll develop this for your departure airport if you spend a lot of time fare watching.

tuesdays usually have cheapest fares (dont have to fly on tuesday, but if you buy your ticket on a tuesday you generally get the best price)

like has been said kayak is good for comparing, i also like to use bing.com/travel for comparing plane tickets, their price predictor feature (tells you if they think fares will go up or down and their degree of confidence) makes me feel better about buying tickets when i do. after comparing flights on those sites and finding the one i want ill usually go to whatever airline's site and book directly from there

i cant remember where you said you're flying in the OP but if you're travelling across country in the winter is best to avoid cities that are prone to bad weather. don't want to hit delays trying to make a connection. generally take connections in southern cities over northern ones

reward miles are great, signing up for credit cards for the bonus is a good way to get "free" flights (signed up for 3 different cards for this in the past few months haha). unfortunately that probably wont help you with your flight coming so soon. it can take a while for the miles t o post

kayak.com, but when you go midweek its cheaper, also you could priceline it.
