Whats everyone going to college majoring in?
I'm in Mining Engineering with a minor in Metallurgy or Geology.

Degrees in Economics and Spanish

Minor in Business Administration

Ironically it's my Spanish degree that got me this job here in Spain as and English teacher. However, it's only temporary, I'm looking into internships with a couple of specific companies where I have connections. Also considering going back to school to get an master's in econ from the London School. I really like economics, but fuck I absolutely hate econometrics, which is the bulk of conducting economic research.


Also, I keep reading "I'm getting a degree in something I love so that when I graduate I can do something I love". Yet none of these include what the hell exactly you plan to do with an English degree besides compete with the plethora of other English majors trying to become teachers.

I have nothing against people studying what they love, but it can't be the only thing you study. I, for example, thoroughly enjoy Spanish literature and that is why I studied it as a 2nd major. Also to meet girls since Economics has a ratio that is almost as bad as engineering. I also very much enjoy history, which is why I study it on my own time, without left-wing professors telling me how to "interpret" it.

^ You know anything about heterodox Economics?. The school im going to attend next semester focuses on it rather than traditional economics. I looked into and seems kinda weird, almost seems like its made up.

yo, as a junior in college in earth science/oceanography - pretty much enviro science at my school - i took sort of a roundabout route in. my suggestion would be to get bio, chem, physics, and statistics out of the way as early as you can. to be honest, I didnt, i hated math in high school and am sort of paying for it now. i had to go back and take shit chem and calculus classes which were harder in college which i should have done in high school. however, i thought i was gonna be in social sciences when i was going into college. in my major, the most interesting classes i have taken so far are pretty varied - last semester i took deep ocean biodiversity, volcanology, structural geology, and biogeochem. awesome stuff. yet, i would also make sure to round out the hard sciences with adequate humanities classes. environmental policy/law classes will help clarify stuff for you, as well as anthropology classes - its cool to see learn how humans interact and are affected by the environment. as well, take some writing classes. even science majors have to do a fair amount of writing, and communicating well really helps. also, honestly - take comp sci. proficiency with R, stata, prism, excel, GIS, and a bunch of other plotting programs will really help. I plan on getting a Master's in oceanography, and then going to Law school, i want to work in environmental policy. PM me if you have more questions.

Heterodox economics is an umbrella term but some of the schools usually included are definatley good to study

The Wikipedia article on it makes the whole thing sound really cool.

One recent development listed on there was Energy Economics:

"Energy economics relating to thermoeconomics, is a broad scientific subject area which includes topics related to supply and use of energy. Thermoeconomists argue that economic systems always involve matter, energy, entropy, and information"

with such a huge emphasis on higher education, especially in engineering type majors, i wouldn't be surprised if that field gets flooded with people trying to find work in 10 years. This also takes away from people's desire to work a trade. With that being said, a good plumber/electrician/carpenter might cost just as much as a good doctor in a few years. just my 2.

that's actually basically what i'm doing. at my school they offer a combined physics and geology degree "geophysics". I'm just also doing all of the requirements for the straight physics degree because that is where my interests are.

I am a senior and either going to UVM, UConn, Penn State, Boulder, Rochester, or Colby. I applied for geology. My reasoning was that i have heard over and over again that it is important that you love what you do, and that getting paid for what you love doing is success in life (within reason, we can't all be pro skiers) I researched a lot of options and chose geology because it interested me and sounds like it would be something that i would want to be engaged in, pushing my self to learn more instead of my parents being on my ass. Plus, it can lead to so many different things. from a petroleum geologist (making bank!) to being in academia and doing awesome research in some of the sickest places on earth. Do research and find what you would be engaged in. Good luck, and remember it's you choice not anyone else's, and also experiment a little.

 It won't, going to law school is the worst investment out there.

Also the LSAT will tear at your soul, I ended up with a 169 but it honestly was the biggest waste of time and I lament all those hours I'll never get back.

Eh, still stoked on it. Environmental law is becoming way more important these days, and it's something that I feel like I can set myself to do, and really work for it.

Ha, I wish I could take the LSAT. It's so easy compared to the MCAT. You don't even have to study. If there was a job market for lawyers, I'd be there in a heartbeat.

You don't study, you practice, and practice, and practice.

Saying the LSAT is easy is like saying what Olympic sprinters do is easy, "Dude, so easy! Anyone can do do that! All they're doing is running!"

Sure anyone could go down there and run from point A to point B, just like anyone can take the LSAT and score ok without studying. But to be able to finish with almost all your answers correct in the very short amount of time given is difficult.

I personally prefer tests that I can study for.

Dude it's kinda a joke compared to the MCAT... I know friends who have taken the MCAT and just taken teh LSAT for fun with no studying and scored very well on it. Shit I am considering taking it for fun as well over the summer.

The logic games are a mindfuck.

You can answer MCAT questions from previous knowledge and studying material.

The logic questions on the LSAT cannot be answered from previous knowledge.

honestly I love it so far, every class I've taken I've actually somewhat enjoyed or really enjoyed, and the GIS class while kind of a challenge seems actually interesting to me.

Biology to me fucking blows, to each their own.

I didn't mind GIS, it was cool to start to learn how to use such a widely used and extremely useful program. It seems to be a love/hate sort of thing when it comes to GIS though.

The LSAT is a logical reasoning exam... The MCAT is a logical reasoning/problem solving exam based on scientific knowledge. Both encompass similar test taking strategies and problem solving strategies to do well, aka they are both very similar. Except for the MCAT you need to be familiar with the scientific knowledge + the style of questions, as the LSAT you simply need to be familiar with the style of questions (hence their no prereqs for taking it).

So yes you can compare the two with each other.

Not entirely true,

there is only one section of the MCAT that is similar to the LSAT, and that's the verbal reasoning section, which is similar to the reading comprehension section of the LSAT (the easiest section in my opinion).

I mean have u taken the MCAT? Both science sections require much more than simply reading and understanding the subject material. They require a lot of critical thinking and logic to figure them out... It's simply not memorization of facts, actually the exact opposite of it.

Ideally I would like to work as a CNA at my school's hospital or urgent care center. My HES major requires a full time internship during my senior year and they are really good at setting students up with work at local medical centers. So I can finish a good portion of my PA hours and complete my HES internship at the same time.

This is probably part of the reason why I would say LSAT is easier. I'm Comp Sci major, so all the logic and truth table stuff just comes easily to me. I can understand why it would be difficult for other people though.
