you obviously have never heard of a liberal arts college, or liberal art majors. some students go to college because they crave the intellectual life of college, and they have a love of academics for the sake of itself, not just going to class to get a degree and achieve a good grade on a test. many student actually care about what they study. people study what they are interested in, not everyone is interested and passionate about a major directly related to a career.

Yes, and the people who actually pay college tuition to pursue those interests are what we call idiots. Welcome to society, buddy.

If you want education, you don't need to go to college to get it. You can go to the library, look up articles online, buy books, or read journals. Hell, a year long subscription to Christian Education Journal only costs $32. College, thus, serves the only purpose of providing you with a degree that you can show to employers. And paying thousands of dollars for a degree that employers won't care about is therefore pointless.

And what are you doing in a thread about college majors anyway? I don't think anybody actually believes you attend a university.

Sometimes you need others to challenge your ideas or help you out. Education is not just about taking in information.

I am puzzled by your attitude. Do you really believe in what you are saying or are you afraid of admitting your wrongs? Surely if you just looked around you would realize that your ideas don't hold true.

Is this a serious argument?

Looking around the world, I see millions of people thousands of dollars in debt with no job because they decided to get a college a degree in a field that has job market.

If you have the money to be financially secure regardless of your job status after college, then major in whatever you want. More power to you. The vast majority of people, however, don't have this liberty, thus making a major Christian Education a very stupid decision.

All the power to you in Comp Sci, at least when I'm working 8 months a year as a high school english teacher doing what I love, getting great benefits and spending my summers in new zealand skiing, I can take comfort in the fact that you spent 4 years in college and came out as much of a fucking idiot as when you went in. I'm sure the salary makes up for your social/intellectual incompetence.

Cool thread. Sweet to see so many other nsers in geoscience related fields. Im majoring in earth and oceanographic sciences (one major, it's the EOS program at my school), and I'm minoring in government to keep my writing skills and critical analysis sharp

I mean. Im not an illiterate jackass. We have 15 page papers we have to write for biology courses, and while not the same content wise as an english paper, you still need to be proficient in writing ability. I have never scored below a 90% on papers in every other class I have taken, whether it be gen eds or science courses. So when I put time and effort into a paper, I can write a pretty damn good paper. I also can't remember if I stated this in a previous post. But I would go into the TA in order to get help from her. Fix what I needed to fix in order to make HER happy with the paper. She would tell me to change things I had in my paper, I would change them. Then edit those parts. Then have another instructor from a writing lab double check the work to make sure it was grammatically correct and what not. I then submitted the paper for grading, got it back, aaaand she docked about 15 points, saying the things that I had changed FOR HER, were ridiculous. You shouldn't have included that in my paper. I was furious. So in that situation I do my absolute best, and just nothing works. Only time I have ever had a TA/Professor like that in college.

Ya, I have and would never do that to a student. I know that some TAs and Professors are assholes and only care about their material and being great at it. I realize that 90+% of the students aren't majoring in my field, so I try and make sure they learn some practical life skills from it. Although I will admit that I have never changed a grade, and have never seen a reason to. I hate it when students feel entitled to certain grades even though their work does not justify it. I can't tell you how cute it is that this made you so mad that you decided to stalk my profile. I am, however, slightly appalled that you could be teaching our nation's youth English of all subjects when you don't even appear to know what an ad hominem attack is.

Also, I don't know how you deduced that I've spent four years in college, but that's not true. Pretty poor reading comprehension for an English teacher, eh? And I'm not majoring in Computer Science either. I specifically said Computer Engineering; there's a difference. One which is apparently lost on you.

Finally, I highly doubt you're an English teacher. You don't have the maturity or the intelligence for the job.

Thanks for thinking up my opinion for me, but that's not actually what I think.

From a financial perspective, going to college to major in Christian Education doesn't make sense. From my personal perspective, Christian Education is a humorously absurd thing to major in. It's like the old joke about majoring in underwater basket-weaving; it's so absurd that it's humorous. I don't care whether or not they think they made a good decision; getting a degree in such an absurdly useless and uninteresting major is in itself funny to me.

That's my stance. Either argue with that or stop replying to my posts just to argue with yourself.

im majoring in computer science because i like it, and its just another benefit that im gonna make a lot of money when i graduate... Everyone should study what they like because you can find great jobs no matter what you study. although Christian Education is a questionable one

Posting despite shitstorm on this page. I'm currently a photography major. Looking into Graphic Design and Fashion though, i'm in an art school so i might as well get the most out of it.

And on the topic of the degree. the piece of paper isn't the point, if you go ti school for a sheet of paper that says you went then go to community college in state. It took me till now to see that school is really about growing as a functioning member of society and thrying to figure out all the kinks in what still is a pretty controled enviornment. I certainly don't expect to make a killing when i'm out and i certainly didn't go to school with that in mind, but I also know that there's good paying work readily available where i want to be when i graduate.

I completely agree with that statement. My mom was a pretty strict teacher as I was growing up, so I ALWAYS learned that whatever was counted wrong, was my fault. Not the instructor's. I always put full effort into every assignment/exam and whatever grade comes out of it is almost always a good representation of the work I put in. Except that one class. She just apparently wanted to shit all over our class haha. There was one person double majoring in english/biochemistry in our class(what in god's name was wrong with them, i do not know) who would write just gorgeous pieces of work. Would blow mine out of the water, just stunning pieces of writing. Aaaaand she got a B. I had 2/4 speeches in that class I scored an 89 on. The only thing that saved me from a C+ in the class.

I agree with the preciously stated "study what you love." Makes everything so much better. Like I actually love science and have a passion for it, same with pursuing a medical field. I'm fortunate enough that careers in healthcare are plentiful. If you spend your college career studying something to get a good paying job, you're gonna have a bad time.

Sorry the opportunity cost of going to college is pretty fucking high, actually it is astronomically huge. You should pick some major that you plan on making it worth your while. If college was free, then yes. But honestly you can get a college education for free online, MIT has some many classes online for free, same with Khan Academy. You go to college for the little piece of paper you get when you graduate, and you better hope that thing is worth your investment or otherwise you just wasted a shit load of time and money.

Perhaps I generalize for a more wealthy subsection of the population...or I'm being idealistic. Either way, regardless of what is practical, you can't tell someone what is worth their while. I never said that's why everyone should go, or why all people do go; I said it's why some people go.

For example: I'm in engineering for the study, not the money. I hate it when my classmates talk about how much money they want to make after graduation, because I don't care and can't relate. I, first and foremost, want to design cool shit and progress technology that helps the world, not make money. However, money is not an insignificant result of my studies. While I can't say for certain because this scenario doesn't exist, I doubt I would change even if their was far less money in my field.

It's also about the experience and connections you make. I have friends that will one day be CEOs of big companies and making a shit ton of money. If I need a job, I have a leg up if the guy hiring me also happens to be a guy that was my roommate at some point along the way...

Majoring in Christian Education is like learning how to teach Harry Potter as a work of nonfiction. It's completely absurd.

Wtf are you talking about? Are you saying it is impossible to be self taught? That is what I was implying by my post, that if you are motivated to simply "learn" you can do that on your own for a much cheaper price than what you pay your tuition.

Is it optimal, is it ideal? No. But I have no idea why you are trying to argue the most minuscule part of my post that wasn't really even meant to be open for debate. The general idea of my post is that there is a high opportunity cost for going to college, so you better hope the major you choose is going to give you a good return on your investment. Does that have to be through pure knowledge? No of course not, but you better hope somehow the time you invested in college is going to give you a better paying job as opposed to just going straight from HS into the work force.

Those people are either very well off and money is not a concern, or they simply are retarded. Like you go to college, you leave with 60k in student loan debt, but you end up working as a brista at Starbucks cause you majored in creative writing or something useless. Are you trying to tell me that going to college for that major was a good use of your time?

I am not saying people don't do stupid things, or inefficient things... Trust me, I know they do. Just saying it's not really wise to do so.
