If you're freestyle skiing it doesn't really matter what kind. If you have black bases you should be doing it every time they start to look gray around the edges.

Oh but always hot wax. Rub on doesn't really do shit. It's nice to have in your pocket at the hill i guess but its not nearly as good as a hot wax.

but old racer men still pass me on cat tracks so it might not be super effective

Any wax is effective but i've had really good results with Hertel ski wax-Super hot sauce. It has been way better than the dakine stock wax that came with my iron.

It's not that expensive either.

I pretty much only ride park and my local hill is really tiny. I pretty much go off of smell alone and wax whenever I feel like it.

My ski tuning shit is on the east coast, is it OK to just use a clothes Iron? I think the holes are not ideal but itll work just as good right?

I've done it and it works fine, but there it's not ideal because you ruin your iron and can never use it on clothes again. You also need to use the lowest heat setting and wax very carefully so as not to burn you bases, do not linger in one spot AT ALL. Keep your iron moving at all times.

I like to wax after every 3 times I go and I use kuu all temp wax with a kuu iron maiden waxing iron and let me tell you soo much better than a shop I am a guru when it comes to waxin these 2

you might be able to find a cheap older iron without holes or even just one with holes at like a value village or something and that was you can wreck itand only use it on skis

grocery store parrafin wax kiddies i can tell 0 difference between that stuff and the regular yellow togo or whatevs, colder temperatures you might want a few drops of colder type wax but the 2$ box i buy every year lasts me all year and im still faster than everyone at mt washington.

I wax every time I go and I just use a universal wax from my local shop. I don't know the name of it but it's 20 bucks for a block the size of my forearm

For what its worth I'm guessing it's shitty wax, I just make sure that I do the best job possible of actually applying it. Am I correct in that thought process or should I start buying some high end shit?

You probably want to go with an all purpose wax. Adjusting wax for speed in park skiing is mostly for big boosting in the stunt tube or hitting massive tables when the speed is off (new snow, spring, etc.) You're mostly going to be waxing to protect your bases and keep them healthy. If you've got dry bases, you are going to go slow.

I use an iron maiden and chocowax. Chocowax is eco friendly, and made by TMC Freeriderz in Whistler. They're pretty big supporters of freeskiing, if you're into that sort of thing. Not many wax producers do the same. There are some good guides on the chocowax website too if you're looking for more info.

Maybe the stuff you're using had a different density to mine, but paraffin wax fucking sucks, it doesn't harden again properly and turns into a messy paste once it has been melted.

I've got no idea what it is, but I got a box of really hard wax that a tech friend gave me so I just use that for dry slope. Pretty sure we've got a couple boxes of Data snow wax up in our tech room at the uni as well.

Yeah, you can definitely use paraffin wax. It may differ where you get it, but it does work fine. It isn't made for waxing skis, so maybe some take longer to solidify again, but it does the job. I've never done it myself but I've friends who do it all the time.

toko all temp or some allround wax from my shop does the trick...

a friend of mine swears by the libtech banana wax, he's a snowboarder and i must admit, he outruns almost anybody on flat parts ....

Haha, well, the speed boost you get from the wax itself is gone after two runs. I don't he's going faster because of his wax.

Wax will make you go faster if your base is bone fuckin dry but after its thirst is quenched, the speed from wax only lasts a brief time.

yeah i was a complete advocate of the theory that your 'gliding' is actually determined by the condition of your base and base structure as opposed to what kind of wax you use until i've boarded with him for a couple of days, his board is beat up as fuck with a ton of repairs and scrapes and shit but still he easily outruns 99% of the people on flat ....

and that's not just for 2 runs .... i'd think it was his base or something but seeing what condition it was in, i was clueless ...

The best test is to fill a cup with molten wax and dip your dick in it. When you pull it out, if you can slide the wax off your cock easily AND most importantly in one piece it is quality wax.

When i raced i waxed every weekend. now i dont have time for that shit

Buy the red and yellow $20 waxes at your local shop. the warmer the snow the more youll notice the need for wax (in general). the red and yellow are the warmest temp waxes and you wouldnt need anything harder (or colder). i had a plethora of waxes and tools, even had a roto brush, brushes you would attach to a drill. it was intense to say the least.
hot waxing is the only way to go, rub on wax will last you until you've skated to the chair.
If you see grey on your base, its dehydrated and time to get to it. it shows up near the edges first.
i could go on about this forever but i tried to sum up all any newschooler would need

If anyone has serious/specific questions about ski wax or tuning skis in general you can PM me. Ive been to many workshops and been tuning skis for years now.

As long as it is not kick wax it doesn't matter- glide wax is glide wax. Glide wax is the same for Nordic and alpine.

For anyone using a normal clothing iron to wax skis, be careful. Nice ($40+) ski specific irons exist because their heated surface is more consistent and operates at temperatures designed to properly heat the base and melt each type of wax without burning either. The heated surface of a clothing iron is very inconsistent- some parts are too hot and some parts are too cold to do the job without risking damage to your bases. If the iron gets too hot, you can burn the wax and potentially ruin your bases, both of which are easy to do with a clothing iron.
