Steepest slope you've ever skiied?

I live in Tahoe and usually ski at Mt. Rose. It is a small mountain but has the chutes which, when filled with pow, are some of the best skiing I've ever done. The chutes are 55* but ive hit spots that are 60-65*. What is the steepest you guys have ever skiied?

maybe that's where everyone is getting all those 60+ numbers from.. they're gradients, not degrees.

Sorry to school you on maths but I just recalculated it and a 78% gradient = 38 degrees.

It's not just 75% of 45 degrees,  to go from gradient in percentage to angle in degrees you do this:

tan−1( gradient in percentage : 100 ) = degrees.

So for 78% that is: tan−1(78:100)= 37.95423088 = 38 degrees.

Hey, thanks for the lesson, also couldn't fathom how that was a 78 degree drop. Nice learning something new, and shame on them for boosting their numbers, but how is a 38 degree drop the steepest slope in Europe??

But I'm also fairly sure I skied the Swiss wall, so I guess that takes the spot then.

I know everyone in here is a BC badass and has skied steeper stuff than everyone and skied 70* chutes...

Just FYI, having snow stick to anything 55*+ is very hard. Also, people tend to think stuff is much steeper than it really is...

I've also skied down Harakiri. The steepness should be round 38 degrees but it really wasn't that bad. The only thing was that the slope was really, really icy and I was on my park skis with dull as hell edges so I was more or less side-slipping the whole steep part. The Harakiri run was just under the chair that used to get back to the village from the park and boy there was some great entertainment by people who wanted to check "the steepest slope in the Alps" or whatnot. Think of whole families of gapers coming down on their butts at 50 km/h while screaming uncontrollably.

Forgive me for the 3 degree error Mr Pedant, above.

They claim it's the steepest groomed slope in Europe. Steeper than that is impractical to groom, even with winches.

Iv e skied the steepest slope at smuggs. Itz a triple black diamond. Its obviously the steepest because its a triple black.

Red is fucking gnar. hike 45 mins up to the top mt roberts, stand on the top of the cornice and look down the center chute. mad props to the people who zip down that hole run in like 30 secs.

Hmm well, we have this at Mammoth. Gives all the angels. Steepest being 53 degrees.




But here, black diamonds are around 32- 38 degrees and the doubles go from 38 to 53 degrees. But the two spots that hit that are GNARLY and make me want to shit my pants every time I even make a slight consideration of venturing that way. I've only skied 1 of the 2 and thought I may die. Wasn't as much the steepness as it was the terrifying chutes and inability to see if I was about to hit a drop or not. Probably won't happen again in the near future.


I'd actually like to know what resorts outside of Mammoth/Jackson/Silverton/Tahoe/CB/Telluride have a decent amount of terrain pushing the 40 mark. Let's talk about that. I need a place to vacation this winter. I was thinking Baker, but I'd be interested to know if there are some smaller Utah/WA/MT/whatever resorts that are crazy. I've heard good things about Revelstoke, super interested in that one as well.

the headwall, when it does have snow on it, is 55 degrees at its steepest and most people dont even hit it.

ive hit tuckermans and a few other hike and find chutes around loon and breton woods but i dont think they were much steeper if steeper at all than tucks.

I'm pretty good. You know. I've skied a bunch of blacks and double blacks. They were pretty rad. You aren't a man until you can ski blacks. Sometimes I ski greens, but only to get back to the blacks. This one run was probably at least 182 degrees. That's why it is a black run.

This at a claimed 58 degrees. I have trouble believing some of these 60+ claims as 58 degrees felt like I was looking straight down.

That picture/video are of Pocket Rocket at Sunshine, which I've also skied and it was definitely just as terrifying as KC's but to me KC's felt a bit steeper.

Anything over 40 just isn't really that fun. You won't be able to find much over 45 in many resorts and if you do it's only small sections, the 55 on the swiss wall is less than maybe 50 meters and then mellows out.

I ski the chutes almost daily and they definitely dont go up to 65. Roses website even says the chutes are 40-55 degrees. Still steep, but not 65.
