remember, when this amendment was written, everybody had a single shot, 6 foot long rifle that took a minute to reload.

that amendment would never be re-written today with the guns we have now.

it's a stupid law, and nobody should have guns but soldiers and officers of the law.

end of story.

look at drugs.  because they are illegal there is a black market for them.  if they werent illegal then we wouldnt have much of the drug related violence.  If guns were made illegal, we would have the same border problems/battles that we have with drugs.  imagine how cartels and gangs would grow if they had the huge new market created by gun legalization.

true, but gang/cartel violence is completely different from normal citizen violence. cartels don't go out killing random people, they fight each other and everyone involved has signed themselves up for it and know what they are getting themselves into.

violence is violence.  if gun control doesnt stop criminals from obtaining them, we see more gang/cartel violence, and we spend millions (or billions) more on law enforcement and prisons, is it worth it at all?  there have to be better ways.

also, the percentage of mentally unstable people who are trying to get guns and shouldnt be able to is very, very small. i'm not at all against banning guns all together and see no reason why non-violent, mentally healthy people can't get them. obviously cases like this shooting and aurora one are rare, so its not like there would be millions of people trying to buy guns and not being able to and then turning to the black market if we make the laws stricter

haha you dont think that drug cartels havent killed bystanders before? i can tell you that happens alot, firsthand account, a service mission in mexico i was going to go to was cancelled due to the problems going on.

you dont know what you're talking about, listen to what other people say i dont know how many people have to say this, making guns illegal is not going to do anything, nothing at all. so just stop, i don't understand how many times you have to be told this but its beginning to get annoying. yes im rustled

virginia tech shooter and aurora guy both bought their guns completely legally, this guy used the guns his mother legally owned. yes, what i said was obviously a little hyperbolic, but its not that far from the truth, is it?

okay 2 out of the shootings that has happened...
in newton his mom owned the guns, the guy who killed the kids in the elementary school yesterday stole the guns from his mother. he obtained those guns illegally.

i never once said guns should be made illegal. i just think the laws for who can and cannot legally buy a gun should be much stricter than they are now.

First off, yes his MOTHER legally owned the gun, but he illegally possessed it because he stole it. Second guns are not given away. You still have to go out and get them and pass the background check to get them legally. Besides the background check you can't really do much more to regulate the sales of guns.

why were the guns lying around a house where a mentally unstable person lived? if you live with someone who has a mental disorder that might make them a danger to others, you shouldnt be able to own a gun. those are the kind of restrictions i'm talking about.

yes you can. you can do a psychiatric test to make sure they don't suffer from a mental illness that can make them potentially dangerous.

who is they? i read multiple quotes from people who knew him saying they knew he suffered from mental illness. and even if they didn't know, they should have. and then told the mom "no, i'm sorry but we can't sell you a gun"

what? i'm not picking on grammar, i'm wondering. his brother knew he suffered from mental illness, his neighbor knew, his dad knew, i'm sure his mom knew. if they had asked these people about it before selling the gun to the mom, they also would have known and been able to tell the mom they couldn't sell to her. i know they didn't see anything wrong with the v.tech guy, again, i think they should have. they should have run a deeper background check/psychiatric test on him and seen that he wasn't mentally stable.

Yes because a psychiatrist wil always get it right. Even if they did fail the psychiatric test you really think that it will deter someone that fucked up in the head from obtaining a gun?

of course its easier to buy guns illegally since you don't have to meet any regulations to do so. is the black market for illegal guns much bigger than i thought? apparently. i dont see why either of these things means that we shouldn't make laws that stop dangerous people from buying guns, though

I agree somewhat with psychiatric tests, it probably would keep some guns from getting into the hands of the mentally insane but what is the basis that the tests would be based on? What determines if someone is crazy or not? The kid in conneticut was shy, quiet, yet very smart. How could a firearm be denied to him? That is if he had went to purchase one.

Someone a few pages back said he did try to buy one and got denied. Don't know how true it is or why he was denied though.

his family and neighbors all knew he suffered from multiple mental illnesses. and an actual psychiatric test/examination would reveal as much. its more than just a background test.

which is exactly what he was taught to do by the police department who licensed him and the person who taught his ccl course. We carry guns to protect ourselves not to be real life rambos.

pretty much this, basically everyone predicts the scenario that thugs are going to invade you're home heavily armed with automatic machine guns and the only way to protect yourself and your family is that you need a to heavily arm yourselves with weapons that can fire at least 20 rounds a second. its kind of ridiculous... how do people not think that this is scary giving almost everyone the opportunity to own weapons. then a civil war breaks out...

Also the "I want to be able to defend my family in a break in situation" argument is stupid. Here's something I posted on a Facebook argument earlier today:

"So lets look at the situation of an intruder breaking into a house at night with a gun ( not that this happens much in Australia where we have tight gun laws)

Intruder:
-Fully awake
-Gun cocked and ready
-Expecting some sort of resistance if someone wakes up
-Probably willing to use the gun if you point a gun at him
-Accuracy is going to be decent

You:
-Just woken up and swung yourself out of bed, still groggy and half asleep
-Fumble around for gun in the dark, throw magazine in and switch the safety off
-Start stumbling around the house half asleep looking for the intruder
-Panic when you get shot at and probably hesitate to get a shot of because you are not sure you want to kill someone
-Accuracy is going to be poor

Most likely result:

You bleeding out on the floor with a couple of bullets in you and the intruder getting away empty handed (maybe)."

You honestly believe the minute you wake up to the sound of someone breaking into your home you would still be groggy? Get real. The minute you hear someone break into your house your adrenaline is gonna spike and you most certainly will be fully awake and fully aware.
