Had around $3000 at the middle of October, but a month of traveling without income sets you back a lot. Especially after losing a $400 deposit and having to pay another $600 for rent the next week.

Soo about $150 right now. Have $250 in cash, and I get paid for the last 3 weeks tomorrow.

So around 900 after tomorrow.

Agreed. I was raised in a wealthy family. Times turned rough in 2008 for me after my father passed.

Kids today have NO sense of savings and what it takes to earn money. I been working my entire life and save as much as possible for the future even if its not that much as of now I still manage to pay off college and keep ~10,000 in the bank after each semester. Seeing a 21 year old kid with 500 in the bank blows my mind when the majority of that money goes to nights out, drus, and other bullshit. I couldnt live with myself with that kind of money in the bank. Heck when my account runs under $7000 I start feeling like shit

I work as a cook at 18 and am poor as fuck. My mom is a teacher in South Dakota. Google their pay rate. My father is a sergeant in the local police force. Shockingly he makes less than you would expect. We are a lower middle class family. I saved much of the money I made over the last three years then bought a car with cash. Not a nice car, but a car none the less. Next year I will go to culinary school and rack up debt in my name because my parents can't afford to put me through college. Or even help for that matter. I don't really expect you to understand coming from a well off family because I don't understand the struggles that come with wealth. It really pisses me off when someone comes in to a thread like this and brags about their wealth and shames anyone who isn't well off.

my family is far from wealthy. I live in a two bedroom apartment with my mom, sister, and brother because financial times got rough for us. My mom works 3 jobs. I work full time. I pay for my own school. I bought my own car pay for everything from clothes to bills to gas. Im in your situation man and have student loans out the ass. But I still manage to save a decent amount of cash

No, you have to learn to live within means.

When I was in high school, I didn't buy a car. I don't need a car and don't drive much, so why waste thousands on a car that is shit anyways, will break within a few years, and won't be used at college.
Then again, it is all situational, so that being said you could need a car, unlike most high school kid.

Anyways my point:
Put money that you save, somewhere untouchable. Right now, what seems important (new hoodie, random gram, shoes) could be spent on shit in the far future that is more useful.

Yes I am well off, but my parents are both accountants, and were taught well by their parents (who half grew up as orphans during the Great Depression) how to save, be frugal, and overall great financial habits. I couldn't be any more happy to have been taught this while I was very young.

a bit over 20 grand in my checking. not bad considering I started my first job after college 4 months ago and had almost nothing left after the move.

Oh, and $140,000 in student loans.

Also, I have an undisclosed amount in a retirement account set up by my in-laws... Not fair to count that amount ;)

Some people have different lifestyles and don't need excess money to feel happy. i had a good paying job, but i quit that job and moved out west, and now have no job. I'm way happier now than i was when i had more money than i needed. I don't care how much money i have as long as i'm eating and skiing every day. Money can't buy you happiness. and besides we're young, and need to do crazy shit and have stories for when we're too old to do crazy shit.

raised wealth...dad lost job in 2004 hasn't been able to get a new job due to divorce/ credit situation. Lost huge part of his money in stock market crash. So now since then i fully support myself and work my ass off 7 days a week in order to save. Agreed with the kid above....kids waste so much money on retarded things....especially weed, shoes, hoody's , etc. Be happy with what you have

Work harder? Work oil in North Dakota for year to save money? there are plenty of options you just gotta take advantage of them.

I pay for my school. My dad is a construction worker and my mom is a clerk. Don't whine about mommy and daddy not paying all of the bills. I work 70-80 hours a week in the summer so i can pay my own

oh and taking out a loan to go to culinary school is a great way to be poor forever

This week I have received 10 overdraft emails.

But it was only technically overdrafted and my account never actually was negative they were post dated overdrafts so the money came in the following morning before it ever got negative but charges appear from the day before so technically I was overdrafted Tuesday for example even though all of tuesday my balance was still positive if you looked online and come wednesday morning the transfers in covered it.

Thank goodness B of A isn't as nasty about overdrafts as they were 3 or 4 years ago and I can pull this shit.


I have to empty my bank account at least 5 times a month and spend money on things I will sell to make money.

It is a huge bitch running a business from scratch when you don't have parents like Mitt Romney to get you started.

Its actually amazing I can make twice what I would working this way so I don't complain.

You're right if I wanted to be rich culinary school is most definitely the wrong route to take. I just happen to love my job and would love a career in the food industry.
I wasn't complianing that mommy and daddy aren't paying my bills I was just attempting to add context. When I made that post I was angry and upset after meeting with a financial advisor for the school I am hoping to attend. I get easily frustrated when it comes to money. It's always been such a hindering factor in my families life.

$49 in one account and -$27 in the other but i get paid on thursday for the last like 4 weeks of work i did and another $500+ coming from my old boss who screwed up some wages then have to pay my dad and a bunch of other people...

One of my fraternity brothers wrote an internet pop-up advertisement program 6 years ago when he was in high school thanks to a 10k loan from one of his friends dad. Senior year he sold the script/program/whatever you call it for 800k. Invested it all in Apple stock, and cashe out a few months ago before the crash. So he's currently sitting on 2-3mil self made. Pretty impressive. I respect the hell outta the kid

Considering I have a $200 camera repair bill on the way and cell phone bills each month, I'm gonna be pretty poor by the time school is over.

I have student loans for school and rent in a different account, I don't really count that as money I have though.

I had around 10 grand worth of Apple shares back in '06.
On a trip my Powerbook fell from some stairs and I desperately needed a new one for school.
Sold all my shares and decided to buy a fully loaded Powerbook a nice and pretty rare watch and two extremely rare books.

You obviously don't know follow the stock market very closely. In 2009 when he invested, apple was in the low 100s and google was in the low 400s, both rising. Both peaked right around 700 this past September when he liquidated his shares, albeit with google slightly higher than apple, maybe around 740. Still, that's 370% increase for apple and only 87% for google. Apple was undoubtedly the better investment.
