people seem to be getting fixated on one concept. That airport security exists exclusively to stop hijackings.

A metal detector is great. Now suppose what you're bringing on isn't metal. Whoops.

Not to mention that it is security in general, not just a weapons check point. Drugs and things of that nature are also prohibited on aircraft. Part of the job of security is to make sure that stuff doesn't get on either. Metal detectors and even pat downs don't do that job.

The scanners are pretty much a one stop, do all device. They detect everything. If nothing else, I'd almost say we could do away with metal detectors in favor of these things.


Now I'm not a big advocate of the TSA, and I think the whole thing needs to be rebuilt more intelligently from the ground up, but my point stands.

Yeah but on 911 I don't they said they had regular box cutters and fold knives, as far as I remember.

That's why I was saying the thing about just get a working metal detector.

And yeah for sure. The swine flu def killed people, but the regular flu kills a fuck ton of people every year so it wasn't like it came out of nowhere. I still haven't gotten a flu shot. Once fear is drilled into peoples minds it tends to stay there. I really feel like some people think there is a decent chance that their airplane is going to get hijacked every time they fly.

Also, idk if you follow drugs at all, but there was supposedly coke that was going to make your ears rot off.

Well considering it was all built up around the fear of hijackings and not because airports felt they needed to increase their security to keep out drugs. I mean you xray the bags, it's kind of difficult to get THAT much through. And generally there's no point of bringing bulk drugs on a domestic flight. Only reason to do it is flying international which you still have to go through customs.

If you can't get through metal scary is your arsenal really going to be? I mean shit, you could probably stab somebody with a high heel shoe. Take your soda can and crush is and pull off a sharp piece of aluminum.


You can put all the cops on the roads checking speed but people will still drive off the roads crash and die. You can put all the disease prevention and treatment technology in place but people will still get stick and die.

You can't bubble wrap the world.

At a certain point I think you need to draw a line. Where do we stop? If we make it illegal for fat people to eat mcdonalds we might be able to save some lives, how is that really that much different than the safety belt law?

If we put cameras everywhere, whenever there's a crime we would probably be able to get a pretty good picture of the suspect. If we put scanners going into malls, that guy wouldn't have been able to bring a gun in there.

It was definitely built up around the hijacking fear, but it's evolved since. It's been 11 years, they've expanded. And at no point are they going to drop back.

The issue that I have with your point regarding bubble wrapping the world is that you're using incomparable situations.

Airport security doesn't prevent accidents. It prevents people from deliberately doing something. So rather than cops patrolling a road for speeders yet there still being accidents, it's more like cops patrolling a road because someone keeps trying to put landmines on it.

And the reason planes need the extra protection is because there is nowhere to go, and no backup. Shoot up a mall and people have countless places to hide/exit, and police will be there within 10 minutes at most. On a plane you are completely vulnerable. Nowhere to hide or escape, and no one is coming to help.

I accept the risk that when I'm driving, I might get into an accident. I might even get hit by someone else. When I fly, I accept the risk that the plane might crash by accident. I however DO NOT accept the risk that someone else might stab me while I'm on the plane. See the difference?

Valid point. You don't have anywhere to go on a plane. At the same time. You can't bring a gun on a plane really so it's you against a shank basically. (And 4 lucky people get to hide in the bathrooms)

And what you said about it never going back, that's true. Technology will keep increasing and we will keep implementing it in every part of society. Years down the road, people won't remember life before these things, and similar things will be in place far beyond the airports. Then we'll have some new technology to bitch about etc.

With the rate technology advances there's really no way to stop it until shit seriously hits the fan. (Like if we have robots trying to kill us in 3172 or something)
