I want to laugh, so just say your preconceptions about the frenchies ... For example, french people are thinking that people from Great Britain are so rich and are able to buy everything and have all the last skiing stuff, even if they absolutely don't know how to ski ... so post your preconceptions nsers ! I guess I imagine them on green lawns having picnics and paying a lot of taxes but getting a lot of services provided... having a close knit family group and everyone is white... and cobblestones..

I dunno man I don't think about it a lot, but those are my generalizations

Well, I know two people who are from france and once is one of the nicest people I know. The other is a pretty cool girl. I've heard that a lot of french people are assholes to americans. but my general perception of them is that they like to eat baguettes, sit in cafes and smoke. other than that no clue.

I took French in high school so I guess I learned a decent amount about the culture from that. I think my only preconceived notion is that they're assholes, but I've never been there so who knows.

French tourists are annoying as fuck.
Living and working in a restaurant in Maine 2 towns away from Old Orchard Beach, I see more frenchies than Mainers in the summer. The majority of tourists who I wait on are:

1. Horrendous tippers. - I get it, tips aren't important in Canada because waiters make good hourly wages (I make $3.75/hr), but they know that they should tip more than a dollar or two and still refuse to).
2. Terribly rude. - Always complaining to me about the food like it's my fault even if it's perfectly fine.
3. Oblivious. - Don't read signs or listen to us telling them to please do or not do something and then try to blame it on not knowing english. Ex: A large percent of them don't bother reading the big sign that says "please wait to be seated" and go and find a table and sit down at it, even if it's dirty.

The list goes on...

I dressed up as a french guy for halloween one year. Got called a fag, got in a fight with 2 kids, kicked their asses and then got maced and thrown in jail for disorderly conduct. Like a boss. Got a head nod from the kids as i left jail in the morning... wtf?

I've been dating a French girl for a few months who came to my university to study for a year. I hang out with her French friends, too. Most of my preconceptions, positive and negative, have been true in some way or another. Of course they are all different, but... fashionable, fun/free-spirited, well-cultured, thinks America's culture sucks at times, good lovers ;), spliffs, modestly dressed, cool, chill/not dramatic, a tad lazy or bohemian...

They are always putting down American food and alcohol, claiming that French food and alcohol is better. Of course, they are right and I can't blame them.

Seriously, though. I think I was supposed to be French. The nine French people I've gotten to know fairly well over the past few months are fun, intelligent people to hang out with, and I connect with them. I'll sit at lunch with them, and they'll mostly speak in French, which I know close to nothing of, but I still like being around them despite a little bit of a language barrier.

I noticed that Paris was pretty diverse when I visited in 2005~. When we went traveled south towards Andorra it was less diverse.


My preconceptions of the French is that they have lots of pride and they are hospitable. I always thought that they take there pride a little too far (big generalization, I understand). Phrases like "Vous devez etre francais pour...!" always come to mind. I find it's pretty hard to get a reaction like that out of a Frenchmen, but hey there are people like you and me. If you try hard enough, you can make me look like an asshole too.

I am sure there are nice french people out there no doubt....but every single one of my friends who goes to france says by in large the french are the worst/rude/most miserable people to visit coming from an american point of ivew
