I'm looking to buy a new camera and would be stoked on your input

Not trying to become a filmer yet, but would like to make some edits

Leanin towards the new GoPro but I don't know a lot about cameras


1. My Budget

Around 400 right now. I could definitely buy accessories and upgrades down the road though.


2. My Experience

Not a ton. I've filmed with various cameras before and made a few edits. I've done most my filming on my first generation GoPro.


3. My Current Gear

I've got the first generation GoPro with a ton of its accessories. I feel the newest one is a lot better so am thinking of upgrading to it.


4. My Usage

The main purpose of this camera is to film skiing, mostly in the park. However, I'm also into cliff jumping and skateboarding and would like to use it for this type of shit too.


5. Will My Homies Use It?

Absolutely. I plan on letting anyone be able to film with it.


6. How Do I Film?

Mostly follow cams or just standing and shooting. Really no use of tripods or things like that yet.


7. Current Computer

MacBook Pro Retina Display. 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 Processor, 16 GB 1600 Mhz DDR3 Memory, Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB


8. My Program

iMovie. Pretty familiar with it, but definitely have room for improvement.

I would say go for the Hero 3. If you want top quality video/audio/picture you can get the black edition for $399.99 (not including tax).

You'd be much better off with a camcorder in the $3-400s than a gopro, in terms of image quality, obviously, but a gopro might just be more convenient.
Jesus there are way too many of these threads right now...

Honestly the new go pros have better image quality then most if not all camcorders in the 3-400 dollar range. So don't base your decision on that

I don't really buy that... Yeah a gopro can do '2.7k' and 120fps and all of that but I can't imagine that the image quality is going to be as good. I mean a real camcorder should be better than a gopro...
I guess i haven't used one so I don't rly know but still...

try 4k....... not that many (if any) camcorders in the $400 range can do that


honestly, the new gopros are sick. if you were to get a camcorder you would lose all the flexibility of the gopro.... being able to say: Fuck it, lets ski, throw it in your pocket and forget about it. If i brought a camcorder skiing i would be so worried about damaging it that i probably wouldnt even have fun.....

Honestly for most stuff a 1st gen gopro will do fine compared to the newer black one. I mean 720p 60fps is fine for skiing, yeah 120fps is better for slow motion but its probably not worth the extra $200 (or however much more it is than the 1st gen). The 2k and 4k don't matter for skiing really since its only 15 and 30fps, and you're going to want to shoot 60fps (I assume).

the new one is 1000x better in low light, audio, has that pro tune mode which sounds pretty cool, is smaller, etc.
worth the extra money.

im not sure if you would need the better audio/low light, unless you're going to be doing a lot of night skiing/urban. And it is double the price ($400 vs $200)
