Getting sponsored is really just the company looking to be able to benefit from your promotion of their product, it's that simple.
That being said, the better a rider is, the more younger children that will look up to him. If those kids see him riding so and so skis, they will want to ride them as well in turn, it's the natural cycle. That's why kids correlate sponsorships to skill, but it's really not about just that.
This, when I met Ian Compton in killy he told me the way he got sponseres was because he was friends with shance who had recently become TC's filmer, shane told the guys about ian and he was included in a couple episodes and bam, he now has his own webisode series
This guy is actually pretty good. Keep skiing, you have lots of potential. I come for a small town, and there are plenty of sub-par and amateur people that get "sponsored". However, this sponsorship is from a small local skate shop, and the benefits are usually just a discount in the store. I know this isn't much, but it is definitely a start, and it cuts down on costs.
