The cash pool is large enough to have riders from all over the country already. There's a lottery for entry so there is more demand than supply. So why not add more money to the buy in? It's not like R2R is trying to be a big prize pool for a local contest.

Like 4th, 5th and so on?

Judges only pick the top 3. It's a jam, so it's not really a scored event, it's more like a tally system, if you do a decent trick you get a tally, if you do a sick trick you get 2 or 3 tallys, if you do something ridiculous you get 4 tallys, person that made the best over all impression wins (it's not like only 1 trick counts).
