Enough camera threads holy Jesus

Is this still media and arts or did I somehow get into a camera cult message board on accident? I come here looking for some new music and all I see are tons of threads about camera equipment. maybe I'm lazy but it seems a tad unbalanced, no?

Definitely noticed that too. Ever since DSLRs got big for filming. Like this is pretty much becoming a gear talk for filmers and photographers, which could almost warrant a separate filming/photo gear forum. All the "what lens" threads sorta remind me of the "what size jiberish/saga" threads in gear talk.

If I wasn't into photography I feel like I'd be annoyed by it a bit.

M&A used to have decent content but now its turned into a steaming pile of shit parading as a photo forum. Same stupid camera threads again and again and again. I would understand if there was even meaningful discussion but its the same beginner questions over and over. Realistically, NS doesn't have the people or background to act as a camera forum, and filling M&A (which was once the best part of this site) with that crap isn't really that helpful.

I think some new rules should go into place or something, harsher moderation. No more edit critique threads, they all go in one thread. "What camera?" questions all in one thread, BST in one thread, and that alone would really clear things up. Unnecessary camera threads need to start getting deleted, kids are starting to think that NS is the place to learn about camera online but there are much better resources out there.

The more accessible technology becomes, the higher the population of people who give advice despite not being qualified to do so.

Don't get me wrong, anyone should be allowed to contribute, but ever since the "DSLR revolution" there has been a boom in people bombarding the internet for prepackaged happy meal solutions to their ignorance. They find an arbitrarily compiled checklist, then copy/paste that checklist as advice for others, who in turn do the same, ad nauseam, often without ever even using the equipment they suggest. The result: droves of kids with 60Ds and Glidecams, because the advice of some random guy whose skills are agnostic to any sort of camera system was taken as gospel.

This idea might have been already thrown out there/ already happening, but why dont we make a thread or cult dedicated to camera refrences? kinda like jamies lens list, but people can also post in the thread with the templete and we can recommend them what they are looking for. It seems like the simplist and most logical way to un clog M&A.

I agree. It s nice though when people with experience with the equipment chime in. Although there is a ton of which camera threads and what lens threads, it is helpful to find out more about gear out there. I think it would be nice to have a forum of cult to have dedicated to camera stuff. Its nice to nerd out every now and then.

Yeah just an open cult, with a few people moderating it heavily. This could also prevent what slandypoo was talking about, because posts with bad advice could be deleted without repercussions for the mods (because its a cult, not a main forum). There would need to be a lot of people on board though.

A cult might be difficult though now that i think about it. People that come here to ask for cameras are sometimes new people to the site. They might not be easily directed to it. Maybe a sticky and heavy enforcement on no threads about it in normal M&A

Because although it might be "spam" to us, to others it is not. I know when i first came to this site/videography, i was appauled by the amount of money people spent on camera gear, but now im the complete opposite. So when someone reccomends a go pro 3, he gets bagged on. People say its not a real camera, dont buy it, etc. However, a go pro or an old canon camcorder may be all people really want. To many NS'ers think that everyone wants a DSLR setup. Im glad i was reccomended a DSLR, because im in love with videography now. But a lot of people asking for a camera are just getting one to capture a little skiing between friends and stuff. So i dont really think a mod can delete camera reccomendations because there are so many personal views. Its different if someone is upgrading and clearly has a budget of 2k for example and gets reccomended a kodak play sport. However, even though how rediculous some reccomendations sound, they are on point for a lot of people.

If you are upgrading, you should be able to make your own choice on what to get, or chances are you really don't need to upgrade at all

I'm not proposing that posts advocating one camera system over the other are spam. People should be allowed to recommend a GoPro without the fear of being chastised by gear whores.

Spam seems to have two parts:

OP, who instead of asking a specific question about the practical uses for a specific tool or technique, asks a painfully vague question inquiring what they need to buy. The sticky'd questionnaire is crap; it promotes that checklist mentality whereby newcomers approach videography in terms of finding their style within the context of a set of tools suggested at the whim of Joe Somebody.

The responses are along the lines of:
- "It's your first camera setup? Get a Glidecam"
- "Get this lens, sheHeath shoots with it and her edits look nice"
- "Get this tripod, because somebody else who is experienced suggested it and I therefore vicariously inherit the authority to attest to its quality"

Instead we should encourage people to post examples of certain artistic styles they like when asking for camera recommendations. That way we can explain what tools lend to that style and WHY. Currently we're using the ends to justify the means with gear, which in my humble opinion is back asswards.

Ah yes, who could forget the biweekly "this money is burning a hole in my pocket" thread asking for reasons to want something.

If the NEED for a tool isn't completely obvious to you, regardless of what that could be, then you don't need it. If you have independently determined that not having a specific tool has preventing you from achieving a desired end, then you may proceed to step two: asking for recommendations on which tools can provide what you need, and WHY.

I agree, the separate sub-categories ing m/a wouldn't be bad. Maybe there could also be another sticky post saying what gets said in every what camera thread. $600 budget - tm700 (or whatever other camcorder), not dslr. And what lenses, 17-50 2.8 $300, 11-16, glidecam. I mean pretty much every one of the threads has the 11-16 and 17-50 recommended, you could just sticky something saying which cameras and lenses are generally the best for the given price range. Or you could just have links to different threads before people post on that same price range.
