so i got it about a month ago on my t2i and havent used it much, about to make a edit this weekend of me and 2 other fiesta snow team members, whats your favorite settings to use while filming with it? im trying to get a dynamic feel thats colorful like the new line traveling circus episode! not sure the best settings to use on it if it effects other settings on the regular mod ect..

Magic lantern has no affect on your normal picture profiles and exposure settings, except iso. Use increments of 160 for iso. Turn on zebras and it will make exposing your shots easier.

i always use zebra , helps alot! so the incrments are smaller so its more pin pointed? but the rest of the settings still regulat with the rest of the camera?

pretty much. Except they have a few features like time lapses and bulb timers (so you can take exposures longer than 30 seconds without holding down the button for that long). It also has an auto HDR setting I think. But it won't actually affect your images just because you install magic lantern.

And for 'what settings do you guys like to use most' this will completely vary from situation to situation. You can't just shoot at one setting (eg 1/100th, f4, iso 100) for all situations and expect to get good results.

Why use multiples of 160? I always use 100 because I was told 160 is 200 with a digital gain of -1/3 stop? So less dynamic range.

A while back pandysloo was saying that multiples of 160 produce the least digital noise

I heard that 160 creates more noise for native ISOs. I usually use either that, 240, or 320.

I use magic lantern on my 60D, so i don't know how similar it is but my favourite features are:

1.Analog Gain control. If you have an external mic, this feature is sweet, because you can adjust the dB of the incoming sound. With an external mic, you can only eaither choose -10, 0 , 20, nothing in between, but with the AG feature, you can put 20, and set the AG to say 12, so it won't sound like your in a hurricane when your on 20dB while following someone, or in light wind.

2. Audio meters. Very useful when you can here the output of your video on the internal speaker. Basically lets you know if you sound settings are set to to high of audio intake.

3.Focus Peak. Very Very useful if you don't have something like a z-finder, lets you basically show whats really in focus by showing colorful dots, Red means complete focus.

4. Time Indicator. lets you know how much shooting time you have left.

5. Magic Zoom. Small box that magnifies the image and you can change what happens when the video goes into complete focus, pretty useful!

Yeah that would make sense, as apparently it's iso 200 with a digital gain of -1/3 stops.

Also the Histogram feature is pretty nice, you can make sure you don't clip the snow (make it 100% white instead of keeping the details)

zebras dont "suck" but histograms are more accurate and show you more detail about your exposure

yeah zebras work too, but for some reason on my t2i (with a sandisk extreme 45mbps card) they're really laggy. It would be nice to be able to see it right on your image which pars are blown out.

Yeah, they do that for me too, once you've exposed you don't really see them again though, they said they had it lag free but it still lags a bit. And @eheath that wasn't my point, they're both great. But the histogram is so much better if you had to choose one.

I dunno about that, it would be pretty sick to have non lagging zebras so you could see specifically which parts are blown out (like sometimes it's okay if things blow out, like if youre looking at the sun, it's okay to be blown out but not the snow)

I am a rookie. I have never tried to lead anyone to believe otherwise. I personally used zebras with magic lantern, that's why i said that. Are histograms better? I have no Idea how to read a histogram so i couldn't tell you.

yes, histograms are. Zebras will only show off the 100% blown out areas, a histogram will give you a measurement of the entire exposure

In zebras defense they do a better job of showing blown out areas then a histogram would, zebras weren't meant to be a histogram replacement.

hm i don't think that's right. can't you adjust your zebras in ML? maybe not, it's been a long time since i've used my T2i, but I thought you could choose like 95% or maybe even 70

I remember them being 95 too, sorry. Still, the histogram will show you a lot more than zebras and it's much better to learn to read them

is anyone else getting lag with zebras in magic lantern? Or is it just me?
I'm using it with my T2i, the newest 2.3 magic lantern, a sandisk extreme 32gb 45mbps mem card, and it still lags a ton

its pretty much constantly lagging, it might be more when I move it quickly, ill test that out. I'll also try re installing magic lantern, but im pretty sure its not just my camera.

Haven't tried , but can you have histogram and zebra on the live screen mode at the same time? Can you use zebras for photos? It be helpful.

so does magic lantern not have a waveform monitor? that's my favourite exposure tool. i always leave my zebra's on, but the wfm is much more informative

dont post if you dont know what youre talking about


most cameras/monitors have histograms, not waveforms. Waveforms tend to be more present in post production. They pretty much tell the same information just in a different way. I believe ML has histograms.
