Non-centered skis

Asked my shop to mount my season rentals center (until i stop growing, its smarter for me to rent), but they couldn't because they ones they had for me had already been drilled once. There's barely 6 inches more nose than tail... this'll be my first year on twin tips. Is it going to affect anything noticeably?

for you first season with twin tips its not bad. Trust me in a couple season you will start to buy ur skis the same happened for me. Unless ur planning on doing a lot of switch skiing i wouldnt worry about it

You skiing park? then Yes. Get centre. Don't be cheap and rent. Buy your skis. Buy used even. Just don't rent. You'll progress much more on a centre mount.

It will affects your rail's stability and you're rotation. had the same problem last year

that makes no sense coming from a shop tech of 8 years.

you can redrill skis to be center mounted. according to marker/salomon aslong as there is 3/8" inch between the old holes and new holes you can redrill. you just plug the old ones. if they are mounted that far back they should easily be able to remount those, sounds like they are lazy.

what shop is this?

i think there is a lot to be said for skiing on a recommended mount

it is how the skis are supposed to ride, so its usually better to start at recommended

also, renting is a great option, waxing is free and you can switch em out for a different pair whenever

And it's not too difficult to mount your own bindings if you're up to it. I've done it several times and haven't had problems. Just MAKE SURE you use a number 3 Phillips (the kind with the slightly flattened head) to get a really tight fit.

It's not a huge problem, but the main problem is probably with rotations. Just get a pair of cheap skis, it is really not going to matter for your skill level.

I mean if you never have had center mounted skis before you probably won't the difference to begin with. However, if you are coming from center mount to a ski that is below center it will feel quite odd. More so on spins and getting your weight placement figured out on rails. But overall as long as they aren't putting you back a like a negative five or something you shouldn't be too bad. I ride park at a negative on my skis, it just takes occustiming to.

damn your mountain must have a cheap rental plan.

at ours, skis cost $40 a day to rent.

I just found a pair of perfectly center mounted (although trashed) park skis at the ski swap for $40 last month.

plus, does your rental shop let you hit rails with them?

but if its your first year riding twins, then you should be fine with traditional mount. going switch will be strange, and your tips will hook, but just take it slow and you'll be alright. The only REALLY hard thing to do with traditional mount is to spin off a jump from switch. IDK why but on my old pow skis (4cm back) spinning from switch sucked so much.

yhea, but OP said 'season rentals.' So it's like a lease I believe, a lot cheaper than a daily fee would be added up

When I got 2012 Line Blends the guy at the shop decided not to ask me how I wanted them mounted and went ahead and mounted them like a normal ski. I really need to get them re-mounted centre it's becoming a pain..thanks for the reminder OP.

I have 2013 blends, and I mounted mine -2cm. Will Wesson mounted his blends -2 also. recommended is -4.

you mean you didnt bother to tell him you wanted them mounted center so he went ahead and mounted them where youre supposed to.

you kiddies are making too big a deal out of a center mount.
Its not like you can not ski with a non-center mounted park ski.

Seward the chances are tat the ski was premounted being a rental. and the shop was either 1) lazy and didnt want to remount a rental, or 2) the shop had already remounted that ski so many times they can't do it again. My policy is 2 remounts. if i see 3 sets of holes or if they are within 3/8" i dont do it

Of course you can ski park without a true center mounted ski. It is just optimal to have a ski that is going to be used only or mostly for park to be mounted at true center.

read the post that i quoted.
says nothing about the ski being a rental or demo etc.

you cant assume that just because you have a twin tip that the shop tech is going to know you want them mounted center.

if you dont clearly indicate exactly where you want your skis mounted than expect a fuck up.

the last couple pairs i had mounted i took masking tape and actually wrote:

 tips.

mount here ---->


tails.

the tech might think ya ya im not retarded. but guess what, theyll never fuck up with a peice of tape indicating exactly where you want your boot midsole.

This. Seriously OP, you'll be fine.

Given that it's 1 season, and switch spins aren't that hard with a non-centered ski. They might feel weird after setting a bunch on a centered ski, but it's not going to keep you from learning them.

I am more than ok with people marking where they want me to mount. Infact I implore that. lots of times ill have kids just say center, and when i ask them core center or whats marked as "center' and they look all confused.

the fact that you mark it is awesome.

But seriously never go by the markings on the topsheets or sidewalls. it could be off a little bit. my friend had his lines messed up that way. one ski was centered, and the other was 2cm back.

i always write "mount true center-please measure" on all my mounting forms unless I do it myself and mark with a sharpie.

who the fuck knows where "core center" is? i cant see the damn core of the ski...

personally I'd say ditch those skis and buy some for your self that are center mounted. some pros like their bindings like 2 centimeters behind center, but 6 inches is alot. but if thats your only option just do the best you can with it. best of luck to you man

I talk with my shop tech about the skis I want, he orders them, and when they get there we set the bindings on the ski at core center, I move it ahead from there as far as I want, and I draw lines on the skis where I want them centered right in front of him.

Some companies are better than others at getting the topsheets lined up in the layup but measuring takes a minute and saves having oddly mounted bindings. Armada are the worst for getting the top sheets lined up together. Ive seen a pair where there was at least 2cm difference between the skis reccomended lines. From my experience Line and k2 are very good at getting them lined up. Same with volkl.

The skis being mounted three inches behind center is a big deal. It will make them unbalanced and harder to ski. Less than an inch and I wouldn't worry about it, but three inches is a lot.

i ski park just fine on my 184cm 118mm underfoot bibby pros mounted 4 cms back, he'll be alright on his little pair of park skis

i lived in the states for half my life and canada for the other half, so yes my mental metric imperial conversion abilities are typically pretty accurate. i still stand by what i said though, he'll get by fine with those skis.
