Chic-Choc Mountains

I have been specifically researching this mountain range, and for backcountry skiing they look absolutely incredible, at least on the east coast.

Has anyone experienced backcountry skiing here?
Is their tours and snow-cat rides to specific places?

I got a friend who went skiing there a few years back. They kinda got skunked for weather and snow conditions, but he said it was sweet to be in that kind of environment on the east coast. I'll see if I can get some more details out of him about specifics.

I've always wanted to do a week of touring in the Chic-Choc's - and revisit Tuckermans for that matter - too bad they're on the wrong side of the continent. :(

I say go for it, a bad skiing in the mountains is better than a good day doing anything else.

watch some Meatheads films. They have a lot of footage from there.

on a serious note though, just cause it's east coast doesn't mean there aren't avvies. Chic-Chocs have a some avalanche terrain, so keep that in mind and go prepared.

If you're going to do freelance touring, your best bet is to book a lodge near the park (in Ste-Agathe-des-Mont for example) and drive to the mountain you want and then earn your turns.
Check out Mont-Logan, Mines Madeleine and Le mur des Patrouilleurs. Those are where the best powder and steep lines are. There's not so many spines and huge cliffs. It's most likely open terrain with pitches.

However there is a ton of mountains in the park so try to find a good map with all the mount and set an itinary! You can always hire a guide for like 2 days and then go all by yourself, unless you plan doing long tours.

Did you also check out Les Monts Groulx? It's not in the same region at all but there is some really nice touring to do there aswell. (It's a long drive, but it's at least 1 hour away from any population, it's a real step into nature.)

I'd love some more information on the Chic Choc's if anyone has it. Me and some friends are looking to take a trip up there for our February break.

Specific places to check out? Dirtbag places where we can camp for cheap?

(Before anyone asks, we are all Avy certified, have beacons, shovels, probes, ect.)
