Is or will global warming affect skiing in the near future?

While browsing my area's 10 day forecast, with last years winter in mind, I can't help but think global warming is contributing to unusually high temperatures.  I fear that this year's winter might be a repeat of last, at least for some areas.    So to all you global warming buffs, is it causing the above average temperatures we are seeing and will we see much higher temperatures in the near future?

If you're not trolling, global warming will not show effects over 12 months. Global warming is a change over many, many years. Every year is going to be different, its called weather cycles.

Where do you ski. I ski Summit, CO areas (Key, A-Bay, Breck)and I think it's already better than last year IMO. In the town of Summit, CO last year, Christmas was all brown, almost no snow anywhere.

global warming is really is a "societaly" (for lack of a better term) generated term. rather, climate change should be what we're focusing on. one year of below average precipitation and above average temperatures does not constitute widespread climate change. of this trend continues, we got a problem.

What if global warming is occurring I have been thinking if this is destroying our ozone layer it will allow the suns rays to penetrate earth much more harshly but also in the winter wouldn't it do the same and amplify the coldness? Just a though

I think we have just had a bad winter last year, and maybe this year..

I defiantly think global warming will take a devastating effect on our sport in many years, just not now.


I had to do a research paper on global warming for my AP composition class, lets just say that it is defiantly a matter that is inevitable. If you 'dont believe in it' then you need your fucking head examined.

Global warming isnt real. Its climate change, some places are getting warmer and some areas are getting colder. But yes it will take an extremly long time.

CFCs are what destroy the ozone layer, not greenhouse gasses. And no, not having an ozone layer would not amplify cold weather in the winter. the ozone layer retains very little heat, what it does do is absorb all of the nasty short wave radiation (stuff that gives you cancer) from the sun.

climate change is absolutely certain.  anthropogenic acceleration of such is what comes into question.  i believe events such as the magnitude of recent storms, intense droughts/heat waves over the last summer and still continuing, july being the absolute hottest month since the record began(1895), and a non stop warming trend could very well be attributed to human impact on the atmosphere, and the first steps in what is often called global warming

so far youre all kind of wrong.
climate change and global warming refer to two different phenomenons happening in our earths atmosphere. climate change obviously refers to the general changing climate to specific areas or regions,..the climate is constantly changing everywhere in the world and always has been, yes most places are getting warmer and some places the climate and weather is getting more severe, not necessarily colder, but different and more wintery weather patterns than normal. (mid-atlantic coast these past few years for example)

Overall the average temperature on earth is steadily increasing (getting warmer). But when you look at a graph of the average earths temperature it starts to spike dramatically right around the time of the industrial revolution when we started to rely on fossil fuels for basically everything,

99.9% of scientist world wide agree that there is a direct correlation to the dramatic rise in the earths average temperature and the start of us as a world burning fossil fuels (resulting in CO2 emissions) which basically pile up in the earths atmosphere so when sunlight gets transferred to infrared heat, less heat can escape the atmosphere). This is what is commonly referred to as global warming.

Yes global warming is happening and very much exists and is real. If you think other and disagree with 99% of scientists than you are probably a fox news watching republican or just a straight up retard...most likely both.

as far as it affecting skiing, it depends on where you are. there have been many record breaking snowfalls all over north american ski resorts in the past 10 years or so, also the north east has been experiencing record low snowfall amounts recently while the mid atlantic has been getting hammered

kind of long i know, possibly not all entirely 100% accurate but i just kind of spitballed the whole thing, ive written a few papers on this exact topic in some college classes so im somewhat farmilliar with it but certainly not claiming to be any kind of meteorologist or weather/climate expert. feel free to add or make corrections if you feel you are more qualified to explain this to people that are less informed about

Global climate change can't ever be linked to any single weather event or hot day, but it does mean that there will be more hot days in any given year than there used to be.

So yes, GCC will affect skiing, and everything else.

2012 is on track to be the warmest year on record, ever.

Actually it kind of does... while extreme weather is a part of life, global warming will amplify it and make it a lot more common. Kind of like how it's possible for a regular person to get lung cancer but a smoker is a lot more likely to get it.

And for all of you kids still in school, you should listen to your science teachers when it comes to stuff like this; they're a lot more informed than your parents.

relatively consistant winters in colorado for 6 years, now its all weird.

Dustbowl global warming too? the 30s was full of droughts. and in the 50's colorado had a 4 year drought and another 1 year dry session. Colorado hasn't had a drought like this since 02' and before that 83'. More common?...

Since I like to ski somewhere that isn't cold as balls (Tahoe) it probably effects me the worst. Lots of future snow storms will end up being rain because of this shit.

Oh well. I'd be down to kill millions/billions of people to stop it but thats not gonna happen is it?

Since global warning is a "societaly" term you mean that global warming isn't occuring ? Are you kidding, what happened in New York few weeks ago, where do you think it came from ? Capitalism deserve to pay the price I guess.
Near future sound like 50/ 100 years ahead of us, not 12 next month. So I believe it will change, especially with the change of the gulf stream, Canada will have much less snow for eg.

The average surface temperature is rising by ca. 0.3 - 0.6ºC every decade, and it is accelerating, although in your lifetime this will probably not significantly change your winter snowfall very much.

CO2 in the atmosphere has dramatically risen in the last 100 years or so (and rising), and the CO2 value in our atmosphere has not been this high for at least 800,000 years. You cannot dispute the fact that climate change due to humans is happening.

The ski industry faces a real and serious threat from anthropogenic climate change. In many cases, resorts have no choice but to implement climate change adaptation programmes to shield their business from what will enevitably be shorter ski seasons in the future. Global warming and climate change are very real and man does contribute to the warming trends. However, Earth has been warmer than this before. Like the Earth always has it will get colder eventually.
Sun spots also have to do with climate so a sunspot minimum could occur so there might be a mini ice age like Europe's during the Maunder minimum of the 1600's and there would be plenty of snow. (not likely).

arctic oscillation, we are in a positive phase and the jet stream doesnt push the cold arctic air down into the us, negative is when we get the colder temps and more winter storms.
