Is skiing killing snowboarding?

Found a really go article way back on freeskier website, wonder if anyone can redirect me for my project.

Thought on this subject?

Did snowboarding give rise to skiing and is skiing taking over now due the diversity of having two planks rather than one?

some park crew snowboard when setting up features because the boots are easier to walk in but ski otherwise

Mountain creek? Cause any time I'm there, there aren't many park skiers, and most people who are in the park don't actually do anything, skiing or snowboarding. But there are way more snowboarders 50-50ing the ride on boxes than skiers.

I went to killington once and never saw so many park skiers in one place.

park skiing is kinda killing snowboarding

lots of middle school kids that wanna be cool in the park arent switching to snowboarding but instead getting a pair of park skis.

10 years ago skiing park wasnt cool. now it is. so little kids see it to be cool and they try out park skiing.

and a lot of older guys are switching back to skiing cuz the vibe with snowboarding is very teenager and the older guys arent into the scene and arent a teenager anymore.

snowboard sales are twin tip sales are up. its a fact

Snowboarding is gay. I can do it and its fun to grab a board if your at the mountain with people who suck that you don't want to wait for.

But I hate the sound of snowboards scraping the snow from the lift.

And I hate them sitting on their ass getting in my way.

I also like to go fast and rip long narrow turns and can't imagine ever doing that on a snowboard. Nor will I go off a jump with both my feet locked in.

But...if I was stuck on a shitty mountain I'd probably board.

Really? That would be interesting to know if that were true. I've always wondered why so many members of the park crew wear snowboard boots even when the parks are fairly evenly split.

yeah this is true. ski boots tend to fuck up lips and stuff when you walk around on them to rake if the snow is soft. I just wear shoes.

Shaun White keeps the fire burning bright for snowboarding and even Jake Burton has said words to that effect because he get kids inspired. I find I can do more quicker on 2 planks forward than 1 plank sideways, although my new skis are starting to resemble snowboards a little.

Who goes bigger in the pipe?

i think my home park is the only hill in the metro that is mainly snowboarders, but its all good cause i like all of them.

yeah boys good things coming out of here. Read the most recent freeskier today with the interview with candide. He was talking about how he emulated, looked up to and copied the snowboarders after getting out of the regulated boringness of moguls to kick against the system. I agree with a lot of what mike doug is saying but im not sure!

Snowboarding will always seem 'cooler' to the general public unless a huge shift happens.So in that regard snowboarding has already won the battle.

BTW. Skiing and freeskiing are the same thing. I don't know why people try to differentiate the two.

Yeah i agree, i think that is just for differentiating between gapers (recreation folk who do maybe a weeks holiday a year) and the "freeskiers".

Yeah but i think the "dude" mentality is hitting skiing pretty hard and moving on from SBoarding

I snowboard, and i think that skiing looks cooler on jumps, but snowboarding looks better on rails. In the park at my mountain its probably about 50/50. i have thought about switching to skiing, but i just dont want to buy all new shit and start over.

i honestly cant believe some of the shit thats being said in this thread..

to the people saying that skiing is progressing from snowboarding and following them is just dumb. snowboarding has always been following the trends of skiing. but then again i guess its different at every hill and really depends where u go.

from my experiences in australia there is definitely more skiers, maybe like 30/70 in favour of skiers.

from my experiences at my resort here in BC its more like 10/90 in favour of skiers

from my experiences of working at a ski/snowboard shop, there is a hell of a lot more people who come in to buy skis, ski boots and ski related stuff than there is snowboarding. even with rentals and even majority of waxes that get brought in are skis.

however i have noticed that majority of people snowboarding are from the ages of about 20-35.

just so u no im a snowboarder.

i don't think skiing is killing snowboarding. skiing is heavily infuleced by it in so many ways, but yes you do see a lot more skiers in the park today, but they are not snowboarders converted to skiers they are usually skiers from the start.

Yeah dude this is what im talking about, my best bud just bought a pair of ON3P's and some ski boots. hes been a boarder for a while now and he was DAMN good but he found it hard to get stoked while watching boarding movies and stuff and watching them throw down. He found that skiing railes was so much more diverse.

If you have ever been to California to ride, you will notice that: The smaller the hill the more snowboarders there will be. It almost seems like the less vertical drop the more droves of snowboarders there will be compared to skiers. Example- Mountain High vs. Mammoth. The ratio is obvious if you have sessioned at both resorts. In general society, It seems like everyone and their grandma rides a snowboard, but get into the real mountains and you'll see many more hardcore skiers. This is true not only in California, but Colorado, Utah, and other big mountain states.

Demographically speaking they're pretty similar, but skiing is always following behind snowboarding in terms of trends.

As someone who grew up during the dark days of the 90s, when everyone punk was snowboarding... We did look to snowboarding films and fashion for inspiration. Both sucked in the ski industry at that point.

The cool parts of skiing were super underground, and you only came in contact with them at mogul comps, etc. Those skiers knew that skiing was better than boarding and didn't sell out - you could go bigger, faster, and shred bumps. We felt like the true rebels cuz' snowboarding was so trendy. And new school evolved from that. "Air Carving" changed everything for me.

i would say it is for sure, every local mountain i goto there are probably 10 skiers for every snowboarder in the park. but the hill for sure depends on if there are more skiers than snowboarders depending on if the park is more snowboarder oriented or more skier oriented.

Frankly I dont give a shit about ratios of boarder to skier, or who outsold who, or who's leading the trends. All I know is snowboarding is fun, skiing is fun, and they both look sick to watch. As long as I can strap in to my board, then everythings alright.

there has definitely been a noticeable shift from the majority of kids going "whoa snowboarding is cool I want to do that" maybe 6-8 years ago to "all my friends are skiing, I want some skis" and then get hooked.
