Another Question about wearing helmets (mostly for the pros)

So I've always wondered why a lot of pros only wear their helmet sometimes? what make you decide to put it on? no matter what you are doing there is always the chance of crackin your skull.
I personally aways wear it just cause I hit my head quite a bit, sometimes I think about not cause its easier to listen to music and can be overall easier but then I always think, what if...

So moral of the story, what makes you wear your helmet some days and not others

Im not saying I hit my head at ramming speed all the time but when you fall, its pretty hard not to hit your head at all. and im 6'2" so i get shit whipped pretty hard. aaand I ski in minnesota, 90% man made, hard snow

About the only time I don't wear it is if I'm taking cruiser laps in the summer. Like if I'm just lapping the Zig Zag Glacier some warm morning. Then I'll let the hair flow in the breeze.

i wear mine most days, I have a had a couple crashes that would have been fatal without one

but if im teaching someone to ski, or just doing spring HDC laps ill shed it

I always wear one because a few years ago I was taken out by an out of control snowboarder. Even though I don't ever think I'll hit my head, I don't feel safe about other people

i ski in minnesota as well. build some muscle so you can control yourself when you fall. i'm 25 and i've probably hit my head less than 10 times in my life.

as for pros, idk, seems to me they use one more often when cement is involved or when catching an edge could equal death

exactly, I got hit pretty hard by a drunk skier in LMP like 4 years ago and I'm so thankful I had a helmet on

its stupid to not wear a helmet cuz everyone crashes, and someone could always crash into you.....with that said, there is a way to get off a rail without crashing and a way to crash without hitting your head. once you know how to avoid catastrophic falls, a helmet becomes a weight on your head. this small amount of weight makes a big difference to me,

Alright maybe it sounded a little different in the post but im not saying that I hit my head every time i fall. just that sometimes ill hit it on a rail or box, the ground sometimes but ive always had a helmet on and its no big deal. I just really couldnt imagine doing that without a helmet on

I wear mine when I hit big jumps, go upside down or i'm skiing fast. i wont wear it for just cruising about or days where i'm only hitting rails. I don't like wearing a helmet i feel more comfortable without one.

To me it seems they use it less when cement is involved. If you watch the X Games or Dew Tour everyone is wearing helmets. But go watch a Stept movie. They are jumping off of buildings and what not without a helmet.

2 years ago i skied 127 days the one day i said hey im not going to wear a helmet. that was the one day i hit a jump and crashed into someone standing on the landing and got knocked out.

I think like what they are planning on doing for the day, just rails, big jumps, things they havent done before etc. But also sponsorship, they all have stickers and crap on it promoting their sponsors so if they are doing a private shoot for a different company they might ditch it.. who knows, there's my two cents :P

I've often wondered about this as well (not about when people should wear helmets but more about times prominent skiers choose not to and why). All in all it's pretty fucked up if what you really want is to ascertain when you should wear a helmet and when you shouldn't. It seems to me that the simplest answer to that question is that you should wear a helmet, always, regardless of what you're doing. Any sort of "risk assessment" based on what you're doing at the time and how comfortable you are doing it is all well and good but if you really stop and think about it it is retarded to decide based on any purported reasonable assessment whatsoever that whatever you are doing at the time does not warrant a helmet. Shit happens, plain and simple. Whether you unexpectedly get hit by someone as mentioned above or something you've done a million times problem free goes wrong (you catch an edge or whatever else), you're better off wearing a helmet than not. A helmet is no guarantee that you will walk away from whatever might happen but it sure as shit gives you a fighting chance of doing so when in many situations without one you are pretty much hooped.

An interested perspective Sean, I, however, have a different take.

Regardless of the risk involved the decision of wearing a helmet really comes down to wether or not you want to look like a pussy.

Sure, many mainstream pro's still do wear helmets, but if you look at most street or park snowboarding nowadays they are nowhere to be seen. Evolution of the sport.

Even with edits such as the stept crew, sure they may not be the best skiers, but they are pushing the sport forward and it is pretty hard to argue. A trick without a helmet looks better, even if its only due to the increased risk. Due to this I think they'll become less and less common just like has happened in snowboarding.

I think it just comes down to...

Mello stuff = no helmet


Some might consider 3's and 7's mello and super comfortable. Others might consider a 180 a tough trick. Regardless, it's a gamble not to where a helmet, and it would be smart to where 1 all the time.

Sarah Burke died on something she would probably call "mello"

Matt Hoffman (bmx rider) almost killed himself on a straight air.

CR Johnson died skiing some cliffs.

Well where I live it is now the law to wear one, I personally think that's great so I don't have a choice. I wear one all the time anyway.

Well said. And not only that, but those incidents happened to people doing fairly mellow things that WERE wearing helmets.

Is style important in our sport? Of course. Does putting style (only headwear at that) ahead of personal safety (in this case protection of your brain) make sense? Absolutely not and if it does then you live in a strange world that I will probably never understand. I've always been an advocate for helmets and have ridden with 99.9% of the time since I started getting seriously into skiing when I was about 10.

If someone doesn't want to wear a helmet, then fine, that is their choice. I don't believe there should be a helmet law in skiing/snowboarding, if someone doesn't want to protect their noggin, that is their choice. But to say someones skiing looks cooler when not wearing a helmet because they are not being a "pussy", is one of the most ignorant things I've ever heard.

Well honestly on mellow stuff you may be more likely to hit your head. You fall off of a larger feature or jump usually have enough time to somewhat correct yourself in the air and protect your head. But if your just fucking around on an easy day and just catch an edge out of nowhere and boom your down n out.

I'm going to be honest and say there are parts of this post that I dont agree with but not everyone should be hating on this post that much because it is kind of true.

Snowboarders not wearing helmets I wouldnt say is due to evolution of the sport but more cultural values.

Snowboarding came from surfing and skateboarding, you would never ever catch a pro skater wearing a helmet, simple as that, never and they land on fucking concrete. Therefore I think its part of the snowboarding culture to not wear a helmet.

Whether you like to admit it or not, our sport is influenced by snowboarding in a really big way and that could be a reason as to why more people are ditching the helmet on the streets etc...

ok thanks everyone for your opinions but do you or do you not wear a helmet was't really my initial question but i guess they are really one in the same.

the reason I asked was just because watching edits, there doesn't seem to be any correlation to wearing/not wearing a helmet, and the severity of the tricks/ feature.
do you in your mind tell yourself, " I don't think I will hit my head to day" and then not put on your bucket?
or "It looks shitty skiing with a helmet on"

Skiing =/= skating/blading. Wearing a helmet in skiing is fine. With the past deaths of amazing skiers due to head injuries, you are not a pussy for wearing a helmet.

I wear a helmet all the time for 2 reasons.

1. Lift bar
2. ski poles to the face

I've gotten 2 concussions from skiing in the past 3 years, both with a helmet on. I dont think they actually help anything.

If I'm gonna hit huge jumps or small rails, I'm gonna wear a helmet. Personally, I think if you don't wear one you look stupid. Just think about what could happen.

I never fall on my head, but what if I did? I could be risking my life because of not wearing a helmet? Today's helmets have amazing technology too. There light, warm(some) and comfortable. Why wouldn't you wear one?
