i know this is sort of a repost but who on newschoolers likes bluegrass/attends bluegrass shows? i saw grrensky bluegrass in colorado a couple months ago, several shows coming up that im going to. Who have you seen?
Love it. I have only seen one bluegrassy show though. Old Crow Medicine Show. Not sure if they constitute bluegrass though. The genre elitists may call me out on that.
Off the top of my head, I've seen (most of these I've seen more than once):
-Greensky Bluegrass
-Head for the Hills
-String Cheese Incident
-Hot Buttered Rum
-Leftover Salmon
-Keller Williams (depending on what he wants to play that night)
-Yonder Mountain String Band
-Whitewater Ramble
-Mountain Standard Time
-Cornmeal
-Railroad Earth
-Infamous String Dusters (I don't remember the show)
-Elephant Revival (more folk, but can be bluegrassy live)
I'm sure I've seen more, that's just off the top of my head.
In more of the jammy genre I love Leftover Salmon. More of a blend of styles but they rip.
Del Mccoury, bela fleck, railroad earth, Idk a bunch of stuff.
A lot of smaller bands and random tracks that I probably will never even know who they are. I try and get to a bluegrass fest once a year, and def hit up the festivals that keep some of that in their lineups instead of womp womp womp
i fucking hate bluegrass.. i love almsot all genres of music and i cant stand bluegrass... way to much like old country music... i cant stand that shit.... but hey to each their own
I was really bummed I missed one of his things over the summer. Can't remember who he was playing with but it was a sick lineup.
And that's what I heard about cornmeal. I think members were moving to different places. Would be stoked if it didn't end up happening.
One of my favorite things was 2011 summercamp thursday night. Wondering around and you'd come out to a stage and cornmeal would be on killing it, you walk to another stage and cornmeal was on killing it there. IT seemed like they were fucking everywhere! It was magic.
I do like some of the offshoots. Some 30db and some of jeffs sit ins like one with moe. at the.down in 08. In a string band I'm a banjo guy, that's what I want, that's what I look for. Yonder just doesn't have it. They're an energetic show, I just feel like there are many better bands that don't get noticed while yonder sits on this pedestal.
And to the person above. Didn't get to check out devil makes 3. They were at summercamp, wakarusa and bonnaroo and I somehow missed all the sets. It was a wild 3 weeks but I couldn't believe I missed them 3 times in a row. Oh well.
lets make this an official bluegrass music thread. post some songs!
i would but im on mobile, +k to the person that post theses songs:
40 miles to Denver - Yonder Mountain
Troubled Mind - Yonder Mountain
and anything from the Foggy Mountain Boys or the Steep Canyon Rangers
I'm just starting to gain an ear for it. My cousin started playing banjo last year and hearing him jam out on it just sounds so awesome. Makes for a pretty epic combo with the uke'
Yup, I definitely recommend people to check out OCMS if they have the option. It was a gret show, and there was a lot of good jamming and improvisation going on. I saw them with the Milk Carton Kids and the Lumineers opening, both of which were very good as well. Not bluegrass at all, but some good folky stuff.
