what happened to rock music

I don't have a ton of musical knowledge, but I was just wondering, does anyone know what happened to harder alt rock music over the last ten years? In the late eighties and early 90s, there were great bands like Soundgarden, Nirvana, Guns n Roses, Rage, Stone Temple Pilots, Alice in Chains, and plenty of others.
Today we have...Linkin Park, Staind, and other shit. Kurt Kobain and Chris Cornell could sing about pain and remain masculine and authentic. Bands these days just whine about all the fake angst they have nonstop. I blame it all on a lack of drugs I guess.
Thank God Velvet Revolver and Audioslave are around. If you know any other good bands like them, please post them, as I don't know too much about lesser known bands.

why do you think that a bands main goal is to get a record deal? I am pretty sure that it includes not being poor anymore. Just because a band is big doesnt make them a sell out.

break up, have people die, or get strung out on drugs...other rock was born, different styles for different times, rock has been coming back escpically after the rap invasion and rap taking over in the late 90s, its around, styles change over time

Well everyone likes to make money. Sometimes 'selling out' just means making a video or releasing one hit single. But people will then jump on them calling them sell outs. The real reason a lot of you flip shit when a band 'sells out' is that now you might see a couple ignorant 6th graders listening to your ex-favorite band, or hear their single on the radio a lot. Suddenly your band that you've listened to for a long time before they got a little famous now is well-known, and a million new fans have sprung up deciding they like this band after they saw the video. You get no reward for being a long-time fan. Well that's too bad, get over it. When I hear a previous album of a band, and then the new one where they supposedly sold out, most of the time I notice no difference except for maybe one catchy song or something.

The Chili Peppers have some good stuff, although I prefer the stuff that came from before they were mega huge, but after they were playing for 100 person crowds. Ya'll know what I'm talkin bout. Blood Sugar Sex Magik, Power of Equality, Give it Away.
