Quick question those of you going to UoU

I'm looking to transfer from a a CC in Idaho to the University of Utah come next spring. Do they require incoming Sophmores to live on campus? Or am I okay to go and live in a house nearby? Also if I were to live in a nearby house/apt. how is the housing down there near the university?

not even first semester freshman need to live in dorms. It as advisable purely to meet friends. But you should be fine.
Also, housing is plentiful and cheap. Expect to spend anywhere from 250-500 with roommates or 550-800 to live alone. the further from campus, the cheaper itll be. Dont live west of state street. In fact, try not to live west of 400 east.

How difficult is it to find houseing towards like the beginning of summer versus the beginning of the fall semester?

Also, is it better to hit up craigslist or somewhere else?

Question: I have a choice to either move there right after spring semester or wait til the end of summer. when will it be easier to get a job and better housing?

Either way man. People are always graduating and always moving/selling houses. You're best bet would be if you parents or yourself could buy a house but I'm sure you'll be able to find something relatively close to campus

Well as of right now I'm living on my own going to a community college in Idaho right now. i have family that lives in utah so i wouldn't have a problem staying with them for a week ro two while i find a job. I just want to make sure that before I move down there that I have some sort of job that pays decent and has little bit of flexablity for going to school. I'm not super picky but i really don't know what the job market is like in the Salt Lake area.

There are always tons of jobs on campus that are pretty flexible with regards to school, seeing as how they are at school haha. I'm pretty sure they also come with some benefits but I'm not really sure what types and they will probably pay over minimum wage. Other then that there are jobs around that you can find and most will be understanding that you are a student and can only work certain hours. The fact that it is a university town everyone is really understanding. I know my friends work for a valet company in town and will work like 5 hours and make $100.

I literally was thinking about recommending valeting as I was reading through the thread and you beat me to it.  I use to work for the company (Valet Parking Services) and although it wasnt the most fun, you can make a lot of money if you gain everyones respect.  Work your ass off for the first like month or so and they will give you the good shifts to make money.  At this point they just call me every winter for the good Jazz games and if I take the shifts I make ~140 in like 5 hours.

They are hiring all the time, but you don't make quite as much money in the summer. Winter is when you make bank because everyone is in town to ski, but it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to use summer to build up your rep and then get all the good shifts as it transfers into winter.

Basically this, my friends started in the early fall though and they've already done well enough to be working Jazz games and what not makin baaaaannnnkkkkkk

Okay, I think this is quite possibility when I move down there.
I appreciate the response.

I think my game plan is before going to the U I'll probably take 2 or so classes at SLCC to take some college while getting my residency. After a year i'll go back to full time and transfer to the UoU.

Another question in regards to season passes which ones are the ones to get. I know there are like 4 or so mountains within like a 30 min vicinity. And you can customize a Park City pass? what is up with that?


Another thing in regards to location of living is this fairly acurate?

You can't customize passes they are all individual unfortunately. I have a house with open rooms if ya need on 13e 5 blocks from the u

If you're in school living in the U or downtown area is way better in my opinion. In the U area you can walk/bike to school super easy, in the downtown area you can take trax.

The red is accurate, sugarhouse is alright, the U is ill the aves are pretty nice and downtown isnt bad. As far as passes go Park City is the cheapest and is the best park for obvious reasons. Brighton is fun for a little bit of both but there is a lot of stupid shit that happens at Brighton. Solitude has good slack country but no one goes there. A lot of people who want a pretty good mix of park and pow go to Canyons but for a majority of the people there they just arent good. Alta and Snowbird are by far the best resorts for skiing powder. I've personally never been to Snowbird but I know from experience Alta is the shit. Don't go to Deer Valley

Okay I appreciate the response. So it sounds like the majority conseses is that:

Park City is a must for the best park.

Then get a season pass for some hills or pow and seems like if you get a group of friends that you can carpool up with that you probably should get a pass up there to save you some time plus have that added fun.

In regards to Park City I noteiced that on their website that you have the option to buy a season pass based on the amount and time you ski? What is usually the way to go on that?

And also on cost of rent, what is the price of rent going for in those areas of downtown, sugarhouse, and the university?
