Skiing Invention Ideas

Hey Newschoolers

My brother is doing prototyping class next year and he has to do a year long project inventing something. So he decided to do it skiing related. So far he thought he would make magnetic ski poles that stick to your gloves, but we want more ideas.

semi- related:

this weekend i built a glidecam for my gopro 2 out of stuff i found at ACE hardware.

the parts all cost me $25

we'll see how well it works next weekend!

Ill have a thread an pics of it up soon.

Are already being made for a couple of years now, not in twin-tip variant but they are being made by Lacroix in France.

Construction is a sandwich of titanium, kevlar and carbon, will set you back from € 3500 to € 8000 and beyond.

There is also the Austrian Volant, they make skis with an stainless steel top layer, a bit cheaper.

Weighted gloves.

As for another invention that needs to be developed... quick snap brakes to be used in lift lines when not using poles to avoid sliding into people. Sometimes I just take off a ski.

And if your bro wants to sell his invention as part of the heartcarve range.. drop me a line.

would make the upper body more stable and resistant to changes in motion. Basically for training to go without poles. That said, I haven't tried it.

Well, I can stop.

snowplow doesn't work in busy liftlines that are slanted downhill. It's a big pain point and others have said it too on this thread: https://www.newschoolers.com/ns/forums/readthread/thread_id/722018/

It's also bad when getting ready for sitting on chairlift or slanted runs into t-bar.

The other invention is straps to keep gloves on hands when laying carves. A big problem for me. I've got a hack ready for this season. I'm gonna have to do something about it.

But yeah, I think the answer is to have a new binding riser that takes the role of ski brake and some new take on it (like a dual fork that jabs both down and outward), and then strip the preexisting brake from whatever binding is put on top... that could bring in warranty and legal issues so my guess is a whole new brand of binding is needed rather than customization of existing one. Alternatively, something that goes on bottom of boot, or back of ski.

but as for inventions, i think poles with built in cable lock, or cable lock that attaches would be convenient, velcro gloves/poles, magnets to hold facemask to goggles, magnets to seal gloves to sleeves, etc

couple things: Ski poles with a cable on them to lock your skis up. So then you don't have to fiddle with your pockets and shit. Would be sick.

And something you attact to the vents of your car to dry your gloves. Like you slip a plastic hand into your gloves and it attaches to the heater vent of the car.

Not to sound big headed but from all of the ideas so far, the design of a new brake for skis seems like the best option for a year long project. There is a need, plenty of mechanics to look into, a study of the problems of current designs and when it comes down to it brakes are basically metal rods bent into shape capped with plastic so not that difficult to build prototypes for without having to do too much plastic moulding. The rest just seem a little gimmicky so far.

Canting system bindings. Not that this is really freestyle related, but with all of the general all-mountain skis now going to system bindings instead of flat mounts it would be cool to design a binding that could automatically cant, say 3 degrees in each direction with the turn of a screw. Instead of paying to get your boot soles ground and canted that way you could simply turn the screw on your bindings and the bindings would cant to your desired angle, allowing much more of the population of general reactional skiers the ability to be canted right out of the gate and have their skis perfecty flat to the ground resulting in a faster and easier learning curve. Just an idea.

= broken fingers/hand when you cant drop your pole when you eat shit, or a fucked up shoulder when you cant drop your pole when tree skiing and it gets caught on something

This is a super cool idea, but I have a feeling that the vast majority of people would not really understand them and could lead to some weird stance issues without the user realizing it. It would make the shop's job easier though.

How come you have trouble keeping your gloves on carving? In Deep thick heavy pow I may be able to understand, but your gloves should have straps on them already which would be essential for that kind of snow. There isn't any reason for your hands to hit the snow while carving down a groomer, as your upper body and lower body should be separated, meaning your upper body stays nearly straight up and your legs move independently below like this:

I had an idea a couple years ago, and I think someone else thought it was decent and rethreaded it later. Basically every kid & his mom has a gopro, and with a gopro typically people have gopro mounts on the top of their helmets. During those pow nights, there are tuns of runs off the the side not lit with fat pow stashes. Personally I feel it would be sick to have a tiny little LED light that you could slide on to to gopro mount of your helmet in place of an actual gopro. Typically something like this would sell for 10$-25$. Lighting is cheap.

i feel like that would be too bright and in your face, even if it is better.

they did something like this in revolver in the night pillows segment. i know they had the generator and flood lights, but they also had individual lights with them as they were skiing. what did they do for that? they looked pretty bright

something you latch onto the bottom of your boots so you can use dynafit bindings. It would have to be super light/super strong and not be able to come off your boot.

buy wool mittens

dakine barons are good. they also breathe nice cause they also have gore tex

unfortunately thick mittens are bulky, and you have to remove them to do anything.

Here's and invention:

thin pipe gloves that are as warm and waterproof as thick wool mittens.

i'd probably pay twice as much for those! that is if they actually worked...

this would be sick, but you would have to be careful not to raise the boots too far off of the ski for stability reasons, also it would suck to be stuck in the middle of the bc somewhere with a broken boot so they would have to be bomb proof

snaps or velcro or something on ski pants to keep them folded/rolled up when walking around in them. rolling them up works, but then snow can reach your socks. so what if the elastic could stay around your boots, and the outer shell folded up and was secured somehow.

I might pitch this to armada or oakley or some other outerwear company...

They have lights specifically for mountain bike night riding and they are a lot more expensive than $10-$25 for any thing decent, its a good idea and it would be sick because who rides non lit areas at night

I'm surprised more products don't integrate the gopro mount system I guess because of copyright reasons.
